I started this group because I want to keep up on the latest books on global affairs, international development, foreign policy, economics, or finance. I also wanted to meet other people out there with the same interests who crave stimulating intellectual discussions. I thought this group could serve as a way to motivate us to stay current on the latest literature and lead us into some fun discussions.
You should join this group if you are one of the many Washington area professionals (like me) who work in the international arena (US govt, World Bank, IMF, NGO, foreign embassy) or just someone with a passion for international affairs who wants to learn more and interact with like-minded people. I miss the interesting discussions I used to have in grad school (SAIS) with people from all over the world, and I'd like to bring some of that back.
Some of the books I'm interested in are: Common Wealth by Jeffrey Sachs, The Bottom Billion by Paul Collier, the Post-American World by Fareed Zakarias, and Hot Flat and Crowded by Thomas Friedman. These are just a few ideas and I am open to other suggestions. Feel free to send me a message or post to the message board if you have any suggestions.
I imagine meeting up about once a month at a convenient location. Once we have enough members, we can vote on which book to read first. Non-Americans are very welcome. Let the intellectual stimulation begin!
