Tuesday ...22kts of wind

  • September 18, 2012 · 2:00 PM

Hello - the forecast for tomorrow (9/18) is 22kts. Is anyone interested to go kiting tomorrow? I have car from downtown DC. I am a beginner and will be using a training kite but would like to connect with others from this group.
If someone wants to give me a lesson we can discuss that as well.

Melissa - given the Tornado warning kiting is not a good idea today. Another time?

How bout terrpin by the bridge. I know a few that go ride there....

S winds are offshore at Terrapin ... :-( ... not trying to bust anyone's bubble, but if you haven't taken lessons then I seriously suggest you do before you go out (look at _any_ kitesurfing store/site/magazine - they all recommend the same). If a beginner goes out tomorrow at Terrapin they'll end up in Baltimore ... if they're lucky.

I'm being serious here (and I hope some of the other more experienced kiters chime in) - tomorrow is likely to be a truly dangerous day for a beginner to kite. Have patience, wait for a day more conducive to learning, and head to OBX, or New Rd at Dewey. They're the best nearby spots to learn at.

Maybe the other T name that is good for South and SE winds. I know the dangers just going to watch.

Here's a list of local launches that you might find useful.

Thanks I'm well aware of the dangers. Like I said I don't have a kite and would only be watching and was only seeing if anyone else was going out so I can meet people watch and learn. I didn't even post the event just interested.

I have two training kites, an HQ Pro 250 and a 350. Happy to share :-)

Ahh ... you can't really be serious, right? Have you read tomorrow's forecast ...

GALE WARNING IN EFFECT FROM TUESDAY MORNING THROUGH TUESDAY AFTERNOON

S WINDS 15 TO 20 KT. GUSTS UP TO 35 KT. WAVES 1 TO 2 FT.
SHOWERS WITH A CHANCE OF TSTMS. VSBY 1 TO 3 NM.

These are the kind of conditions that even experienced riders don't come back from. And there aren't a lot of good launches near DC for purely S winds ... :-(

Unfortunately you can't kite anywhere near Haines Point due to it's proximity to the airport, amongst other things. Landboarders have been removed from there by the Secret Service ...

If you're a beginner and really want to learn, head to OBX. The weather and launches are much more beginner-friendly there.

Oh no, the kite issue is a well known fact in the kiteboarding community. The Secret Service and DC cops have asked several landboarders to "move on" from Haines Pt, Ohio Drive, and the Mall as a whole. I think that there's also a 3 mile kite-flying restriction around the airport (and of course, our "kites" aren't your average kid's "kite").

I can't find the other links right now ...

Yeah, i can see an issue with landboarding, there is really no space at Hains Point to do this safely. But I have had no problems with flying a training kite during all of this summer.

This has been a bad summer. Don't worry, Fall is right around the corner ... you'll get your chance!

      September 17, 2012

  • Tilman

Hi Melissa, if leaving earlier is not possible and there is still enough wind we could go to Haines Point.
