How to Join

Instructions for applying to join this meetup group

Please provide a few sentences explaining (1) who you are, and (2) why you want to join this group. Examples:

I'm a second-year MBA student at George Mason and planning on starting my own product company soon after graduation. I've read a bit about Eric Ries's work and want some advice on specific lean tactics I can use in starting my company. I'm passionate about...

I'm a software engineer who has been working on his own startup product in the evenings and weekends. I'm trying to learn how to identify what I should be building before I start building it. So far I've learned...

I'm not really planning on starting a company - family and time commitments don't allow it - but I work on product strategy for X corp and am trying to introduce lean practices into our product management process. I have read....

Why are we asking you to do this?

There are a lot of great general professional development meetup groups in the DC area where we can 'meet interesting people'. This isn't one of those groups, and we're quite confident you won't enjoy it unless you can relate to our mission of building great products with minimal waste.

And unfortunately spammers attempt to join these groups as well. We're quite sure you don't want to get more spam.

How about companies that provide services to startups?

Well...it depends. But generally, no.

Accountants, lawyers, contract development and design companies provide an invaluable service to entrepreneurs and we could not succeed without them. They are trusted advisors and friends. But our members have - quite emphatically - advised us that they will abandon the group if they are pitched services at our events.

Of course this is not a black-and-white rule. Many people provide services to startups and are building products themselves. Some service providers actively promote and contribute to the lean startup movement. Bottom line: is you'll enjoy this group if you want to contribute to the thinking and strategies for building great products with minimal waste.

And since almost all of our members are not, by definition, spending aggressively we are a TERRIBLE group for selling services anyway.

Is this meetup group for you?
Do you want to start a product company someday? Have you started one already in your spare time? Are you a passionate follower of #leanstartup on Twitter? Have you read '4 Steps to the Epiphany'? Have you started 3 companies and failed?

If the answer is no, no, no, no...then no, it is probably not for you.
