Aquilent is pleased to announce the list of speakers for the upcoming Health 2.0 STAT event on Thursday, February 2, 2012, at The Barking Dog in Bethesda. Registration is now open!
Plan to join us the evening of February 2nd to hear a rapid-fire series of short presentations from five Health 2.0 leaders. The presentations will be followed by a panel style Q&A session, led by Ahava Leibtag, who will facilitate and explore a range of topics. The presentations will highlight results associated with the innovative implementation and use of Web 2.0 based solutions in the healthcare market, at government agencies, and from a patient and user perspective.
Topics and Speaker Bios:
1) USDA - ChooseMyPlate.gov & SuperTracker
Dr. Robert Post will present an overview of USDA’s new multi-modal, multi-year MyPlate –Dietary Guidelines communications plan that includes web-based resources at ChooseMyPlate.gov as well as the new SuperTracker. ChooseMyPlate.gov and SuperTracker operationalize the Dietary Guidelines for Americans in a personalized and interactive way. Since the release on December 22, 2011, there have been millions of visits to the website and thousands of registered users of the e-tool. A brief tour of the amazing SuperTracker and its dazzling features will be provided.
Since June 2007, Dr. Robert Post has been the Deputy Director of USDA’s Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion (CNPP). There, he represents the Department and directs USDA’s programs to set national nutrition policy, and design and implement innovative and effective science-based national nutrition promotion and outreach programs, to improve the health of all Americans. In this position, Dr. Post has been responsible for overseeing the development and implementation of the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans and supporting programs, including the Healthy Eating Index and the USDA Food Plans. He provides direct oversight for the design and implementation of the Government's new MyPlate food icon, the new ChoseMyPlate.gov website, and the associated multi-modal, multi-year Dietary Guidelines consumer communications campaign. Under the MyPlate public-private partnerships initiative, he is leading a challenge to corporate America, youth and research organizations, and public sector partners, to help magnify the reach of Dietary Guidelines nutrition messages by creatively working in ways that promote healthy eating practices and increase physical activity.
Dr. Post has 30 years of experience in food and agriculture public policy, food production and processing, nutritional science, food marketing, and public health communications and education. He is also an adjunct professor in the Nutrition and Food Science Department of the University of Maryland.
2) Cancer.gov Mobile Web Launch
As chief of communications technology at the National Cancer Institute, Jonathan Cho oversees Web and New Media design and development activities within the Office of Communications and Education
(OCE). He has primary responsibility for management of Cancer.gov, the NCI intranet (myNCI), various other Web properties of the institute, and OCE’s new/social media tools. Jonathan is an advocate for leveraging the power of technology to positively influence people’s lives and especially their health.
Before joining NCI, Jonathan was program manager of Global IT Infrastructure at the U.S. Peace Corps, where he managed enterprise IT systems for Peace Corps offices worldwide. Jonathan is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied political science and philosophy.
3) A local Cancer fund-raiser had an unexpected twist - generating a viral video, big donations and fame for an unlikely celebrity. Ed Bennett shares the inside story.
Ed Bennett manages web operations at the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC). Ed has over fifteen years of experience working on the Internet, and has worn many hats – programmer, designer, consultant, information architect, start-up participant, etc. Since 1999 he has led the UMMC Web program building out large, content-rich websites designed to educate and attract new patients. He pioneered search engines optimization techniques that are now standard for hospital websites. His current focus is the growing use of Social Media and its impact on health care. Ed maintains the Hospital Social Network List, which tracks the social media activities of over 1,100 U.S. Hospitals.
4) FastForward Health
About a year ago a few of us in public health were brainstorming about bringing more storytelling and arts to public health in a powerful and positive way. Co-Founded by David Haddad and Andre Blackman (of Pulse + Signal), along with a group of planning committee volunteers; we launched the inaugural public health innovation film festival called FastForward Health the evening of 11/1/11 at the West End Cinema during APHA 2011.
Public health is not playing in slow-motion anymore. Public health is no longer “behind the scenes." Most importantly, public health is changing. By interacting via a web of social tools, people have come to see themselves as empowered individuals in a connected world. It was only a matter of time until they started to see themselves as the originators of public health innovation.
Online and console games, mobile devices, community gardens, art, and storytelling are all part of the many initiatives reinvigorated by individuals who are empowered by a sense of community. To begin to navigate the labyrinth of global health issues, we need these new and connected solutions.
mHealth and social media are an integral part of how public health is innovating/transforming into a new era. Companies and individuals are lifting examples from across the world in terms of technology and social media and using it to change health behavior and improve health outcomes. One of the main tracks of the film event is technology which we believe is a major theme in health innovation.
David Haddad [@haddadda] is a trained health economist turned mHealth specialist. No stranger to the global health arena, he's worked for organizations like UNF-mHealth Alliance, USAID, Microsoft, PAHO, and the WHO. He’s currently the program manager for Open mHealth.
5) Using Web 2.0 Media to Engage the Workforce
Mike O’Brien’s presentation will discuss how Benefitfocus provides technology that unifies the fragmented employee health experience using Web 2.0 media and partner Apps to engage the workforce. Over 15M consumers experience the Benefitfocus platform through employers, carriers, and government entities.
Mike O'Brien is a graduate of Loyola University and recently completed his MBA. He has over 20 years of experience in technology, human capital, and economics/finance.
