Plan to join us the evening of November 18th to hear a rapid-fire series of short presentations from five Health 2.0 leaders. The presentations will be followed by a panel style Q&A session, led by the moderator, Phil Baumann, who will facilitate and explore a range of topics. The presentations will highlight results associated with the innovative implementation and use of Web 2.0 based solutions in the healthcare market, at government agencies, and from a patient and user perspective.


Phil Baumann is a non-traditional registered nurse who helps organizations redesign their business processes for the 21st Century. He writes, speaks, and leads projects related to adopting emerging technologies in the healthcare and life sciences industries. He is a member of the Better Health Network of medical bloggers, runs the Web consultancy CareVocate, is founder of RNchat, and is principle of Venture Storm, a network of intellectual capital for new and existing ventures. He blogs regularly at­ and tweets copiously as @PhilBaumann­.

Topics and Speaker Bios:

1) Bite, Snack, Meal: Health Content in the Mobile Age

Richard Stapleton will discuss the rapid growth in the use of mobile devices to access health information and will touch on who is using mobile this way, and why. He will also lay out his “bite, snack, meal” approach to the presentation of textual web content in such a way that one iteration serves both mobile and traditional web audiences.

Since 2005, Richard Stapleton has been the Senior Policy Advisor, Deputy Director of the Web Communications Department at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

2) Dammit, Jim, I'm a doctor, not a brick layer. Building health literacy, one educated patient at a time.

Educating patients on conditions and treatment options is critical in healthcare delivery, but often poorly executed, at best, and overlooked, at worst. While technology helps, reliance on it exclusively misses the broader opportunity and responsibility that healthcare professionals have to truly connect with the patient in the exam room and with the patient's "care guider" outside the clinic in an effective and meaningful way.

After a career as an investigative journalist and then a digital marketing executive in the advertising industry, Simon Lee co-founded lee|stafford, llc in 2004 to provide marketing and communications services to the medical device industry, specifically focusing on two areas: new product launches and patient education. In 2009, Simon and his business partner, Jon Davis, expanded with the creation of, a health-literacy service that provides completely customized patient education content, using proprietary technology to deliver patient-focused information across multiple points of contact with patients.

3) Hot dogs, Flip-Flops and Shorts - Healthcare Organizations’ Successes/Failures at the Backyard Barbecue of Facebook

The healthcare organizations that are successful in social media understand that Facebook is not an advertising channel or infomercial. It’s not even a cocktail party - it’s a backyard barbecue. Jacquelyn Kittredge will present case studies and examples of what works and what doesn’t. Missteps, bloopers, and all out failures will be discussed as will shining moments, achievements and masterpieces. She’ll introduce ideas for making the most of your page and interacting like a human, with a hula hoop, cut-offs and, oh by the way, a working knowledge of your organization and how it can help people in your community.

Jacquelyn Kittredge created her company, e-bakery, to help healthcare organizations and non-profits incorporate social media strategies into their marketing mix. A consultant with a checkered past, Jacquelyn started her career at HBO & Co. (now McKesson) installing computer systems in hospitals. She has also worked as a corporate trainer, user documentation specialist, and middle school teacher. Her teaching and training experience helps her keep the tech stuff people-friendly and easy to learn. Formerly the Director of Marketing and Chief Evangelist for a healthcare start-up company, Voicecode, Jacquelyn lives in Alexandria, Virginia with her husband, one dog, and their three boys.

4) Patient to Patient: The importance of peer support in the health care research environment.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical Center has developed a Patient Portal to connect patients on clinical trials to those with similar diseases or going through similar treatments. Because some of our patients have rare diseases and may be one of only a few in the entire country who are known to be experiencing the disease, establishing such support and interaction is invaluable. This presentation will describe how an interactive platform is transforming the way we think of patient support groups.

Virginia Hill Condon, MSW, works as the Special Assistant to the Deputy Director for Educational Affairs & Strategic Partnerships at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical Center. Nicknamed, “America’s Research Hospital,” the Clinical Center is devoted solely to clinical and translational research and training. Here, Virginia serves a dual-role as a communications specialist and management analyst. Her major areas of interest include social media as a tool for open government and creating meaningful interactions between government and the public. These interests were strengthened during her 2-year experience as a Presidential Management Fellow (PMF) at NIH. Prior to joining the government, Virginia earned her Master of Social Work from Louisiana State University in 2007 and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of Illinois in 2005.

5) Collaboration at IPM – it’s not about Technology

The International Partnership for Microbicides (IPM) is a non-profit product development partnership whose mission is accelerating the development of a microbicide that will prevent the transmission of HIV to women in developing countries. IPM achieves this mission by: screening compounds and design optimal formulations; developing clinical trial sites and conducting clinical trials; identifying appropriate regulatory pathways for microbicide products; and establishing manufacturing and distribution capacity to ensure rapid access to a microbicide as soon as it becomes available.

Over the past year, IPM has focused their efforts on using Microsoft SharePoint 2007 to accelerate collaboration both internally and externally as they prepare for their largest Phase III trial. Their success has been tremendous. During this talk Dee Anne Gavlick will share a couple of concepts that have allowed them to embrace new ways of working practically overnight.

Dee Anne Gavlick is the Knowledge Manager at the International Partnership for Microbicides (IPM). Ms. Gavlick is responsible for establishing the organization-wide Knowledge Management Program strategy and helping IPM team members leverage best practices in information management and collaboration to exceed the organization’s goals. Prior to joining IPM, she was a consultant and SharePoint Architect for Springhouse Education and Consulting Services, a Microsoft Gold Partner. In that role she consulted with numerous clients to define, build, and deploy SharePoint solutions to support Knowledge Management and business process improvements.

With more than ten years of Knowledge Management experience, Ms. Gavlick has also held strategic and tactical roles supporting Knowledge Management Programs at Unisys Corporation, SAP America, and Solomon Edwards Group, LLC. Ms. Gavlick is also an Executive Committee member of the Knowledge Management Group of Philadelphia ( ) — one of the longest-running, free Knowledge Management Communities of Practice in the United States. Ms. Gavlick holds a B.S. in management from Rosemont College and a M.B.A. in new ventures from Pennsylvania State University.
