Muslims for Progressive Values - DC Chapter Pages

Our Mission Statement:
The Muslims for Progressive Values - DC Chapter Meetup's mission is to provide a virtual and real space for Progressive Muslims and our friends to build a community, pursue intellectual growth, engage the community in dialog, and perform community service. We aim to conduct activities in a way that is in keeping with Islamic principles of mercy, justice, charity and intellectual achievement. MPV-DC is inclusive of those individuals that identify themselves as Progressive Muslims regardless of gender, lifestyle, economic or educational background, race, nationality or affiliation with any sector subgroup of Islam.

New! DC Progressive Muslim Meetup Discussion Group and Mailing List Policies

The Muslims for Progressive Values - DC Chapter Meetup (MPV-DC) was founded in 2004 (as Washington Progressive Muslim Meetup) to provide a place for Progressive Muslims and their friends to meet and discuss Islam from a liberal perspective. While a variety of definitions of "progressive Islam" can be found, this group is guided by the words of Professor Omid Safi:

"Progressive Islam encompasses a number of themes: striving to realize a just and pluralistic society through a critical engagement with Islam, a relentless pursuit of social justice, an emphasis on gender equality as a foundation of human rights, and a vision of religious and ethnic pluralism."

We welcome all individuals to this group, regardless of your level of familiarity with Islam or progressive politics.

MPV-DC meets approximately once a month. Our meetings can be open salons for the exchange of ideas, lectures on topics in progressive Islam, interfaith gatherings, or cultural and educational outings. Recent programs include film screenings, concerts, art exhibitions, and book talks. We are open to suggestions from our members and invite you to contribute your ideas at any time. Check our Calendar to see some of our recent past events as well as our upcoming plans.

We also maintain a self-moderated discussion list open to our members only.

This meetup is a grassroots effort run and funded by the members. The organizers are volunteers. No payment is required to view our calendar. Membership is $50 a year, and members receive a 10 percent discount on all MPV-DC and MPV-USA national events. Our annual membership fees are used to defray the annual $144 fees to use Meetup.com and other events (e.g., iftaars during Ramadan).
