Rock Climbing at Great Falls

Location: Ok , let's get an early start on the day and do some outdoor climbing. We'll be climbing at Great Falls National Park in Virginia. There isn't an actual street address for the park and the address listed above is just approximate. Get directions from here, or use GPS coordinates.  GPS coordinates for the park entrance:[masked], -77.255. GPS coordinates for the climber's sign-in board:[masked], -77.253910. Make a hairpin turn to the right about FIVE FEET past the entrance booth to get to the first parking lot. The climbers' sign-in board is at the far end of the parking lot. If you miss the turn (or that lot is full), park in the second lot and then walk back to the first parking lot.

I set the rsvp's to 12 for now . That may increase on how many come with top setup.

Note: There is a $5/vehicle entrance fee at the park (unless you have an annual park pass, which costs $20). Carpool to save some $$.

The Climbing: Great Falls has dozens if not hundreds of climbs. We'll figure out what to set up once everyone gets there.

Required Equipment:

  • Harness
  • Climbing shoes (because of the weather, you may be more comfortable wearing socks w/ your climbing shoes)
  • Helmet - Even a bike helmet is better than no helmet
  • Food & Water (I'm not sure the park's concession stand will be open and it's a long walk from where the climbing is. So you should bring your own. Brownie points if you bring enough to share ;)
  • Warm clothing
  • Sunscreen & bug repellant

If you've got a climbing rope and anchor gear (static lines, locking biners, etc.) mention it in your RSVP. I'll increase the attendee limit once I know who else can go and what gear they can bring.

Required Experience:

  • You must know how to climb & top-rope belay (i.e. gym climbing) but you don't need to be a very good climber (though you do need to be a good belayer)
  • Outdoor climbing experience not required. This is a great "first time outdoors" trip.

Anyone missing a blue/gray Black Diamond climbing helmet? I took it home because I didn't want to leave it behind, and no one would claim it.

Thanks guys! I had a great time meeting you all and thanks to Rachel and co for giving me a lift! I even experienced a twinky! not sure if they would take off in the UK :)

Hope to be in DC next year so will defiantly look you all up for then, I am even looking for a new Job this year so maybe I will venture to the US, see what comes around.

And of course thank you to all who brought and shared there gear with not only myself but also everyone else. Without which this trip would not have been possible.

if you want to stay in touch my email address is: [masked], from there I can send on my cell and land line numbers and face book details - apparently there are loads of 'quinton sheppard's in the US!

All the best to you all,
    Quinton :)

P.S. its just a great shame I have to go back to the UK next week and so soon.

I've got a setup, but not sure where to set it. I would rather throw up a slackline if people are interested - I'll have that in my trunk too. So long as being 'on call' for work doesn't mean actually working...

    July 3, 2013

    • Edith

Woohoo! I was thinking that too... I'm considering taking out my virgin slackline and hammock. :)

  • Andrian H.

Darn it Jared. I have some unfinished business at Bird's Nest from this spring. I will take a second set up there. Maybe run another line as Cedric and I had last time for a warm up area?

    July 3, 2013

  • Jared

Two quick points. I don't know how late we'll run, but we usually head into Great Falls and hit up http://www.yelp.com/biz/old-brogue-irish-pub-great-falls the food is great. To help organize our adventure it would be helpful if those bringing setups select an "area" before they arrive and announce it. http://www.rockclimbing.com/routes/North_America/United_States/Virginia/DC_Metro_-_North_Eastern/Great_Falls_Park/

I have three setups and plan on climbing at Bird's Nest

Would be my first meetup with this group if the size gets bumped up- I have 2 ropes and associated gear to set up TR.

    1 · July 1, 2013

  • Amanda

Definitely one full set-up - possibly two!

    2 · July 1, 2013

  • Dennis H.

Wow , almost everyone has thier own setups , cool . That means I don't have to pack four ropes setups in , awesome ....

    June 26, 2013

    • Andrian H.

oh no, not for you Dennis, you have to hump in full expedition weight in 90 degree weather so if that means four sets and a sand bag so be it :)

      1 · June 27, 2013

    • Dennis H.

      Ha ha Andrian

      June 27, 2013

  • Gabe B.

    I've got a rope/anchor gear setup + an extra harness/helmet

    June 26, 2013

  • amy

I have a full set-up and a space women's medium harness if anyone needs it. I will have my daughter with me, she is 7 but a solid climber with her own gear....if only she could belay.

    June 24, 2013

  • Assaf R.

I forgot to mention I also have a full setup and one spare harness.

    June 24, 2013

  • Andrian H.

have a full kit to bring also.

    June 24, 2013

  • Sandra

This sounds great but I haven't any equipment. Can it be rented?

    June 23, 2013

    • Jared

We have enough for an expedition. Don't worry.

      June 23, 2013

    • Sandra

      Excellent!
