Ice Climbing in New Hampshire -- Frankenstein et al.

Ice Climbing in New Hampshire.

We'll be meeting up at the Conway Hostel every morning.  The focus of the weekend is ice climbing.  There are plenty of other things we can do - resort skiing, backcountry skiing, a summit of Mt Washington, etc.  Each night, we can decide as a group what we're doing the next day.

I grew up about 3 hours from Conway.  I'm happy to provide beta on the area, including ice climbing locations.

Not sure who is still coming and when ... we are in room 5 in the hostel and we plan on doing some early climbing tomorrow morning. Call if you have any questions.

No, we are all set. We'll try to leave by 7pm to miss the crowds. Are you renting and if so, did you rrserve?

are people planning on doing any backcountry skiing/snowboarding? i'm trying to figure out whether i should bring my board up -- would love to try some backcountry for the first time.

Backcountry skiing is typically spring skiing in Tuckermans. The think the best backcourty right now would be the Cog Railway. I'm mild but fun and gives you a chance to use your climbing skins.

I'm looking forward to this! I'll probably drive up Thursday evening after work..... probably around 6/630 from Silver Spring. I'll probably get going on my way back south early afternoon on Sunday. If you're interested in sharing the cost of gas/tolls, let me know.

Hi, Ty. I would like to go, but I have just joined this Meetup. So, there is not enough time for me to get ready for this trip. I'll have to pass this time, although it sounds very very interesting. I would need a ride to event places in the future and would like to share the cost with you if you can. I am also in Silver Spring. Hope you all enjoy New Hampshire! Hiroko

Just another update... A group of us are staying with a friend at a cabin in the area. We have a few different things planned - snowshoeing/cross country skiing, possibly a one-day Pemi Loop, ice climbing, etc. One of us has all the ice climbing gear and the rest of us are newbies. It would be fun to hook up with all of you on Saturday. I'll post some info in the google doc.

    February 10, 2013

  • Shelley

I'll actually be with four friends, but the meetup site won't let me have more than 2.

The snow'pocalypes dumped a lot of snow up here this week. Most of the popular hikes will be well packed out by next week. Tuckerman's and all the Frankenstein approaches will be fine. The off the beaten path objectives might need some flotation to reach.

    Everyone:

I need a firm headcount for people going on this trip. Please fill out the google doc.

    Giuseppe,
Sure, you can arrive on Sunday. I'll be there. There are plenty of options for things to do after the weekend. Some of them are listed in my previous comment.

Hi Thad I am a new member from Italy. I really would like to come but I don't know if I can come on Sunday through Wednesday. You'll be there? what can we do after the weekend?

    February 2, 2013

  • Thad

I've been to a few different areas near Conway and Lincoln that have good top rope ice climbing. I'm happy to show you all the way there and help set up ropes.

Other options include skiing and a summit of Mt Washington via the Lion Head winter route (conditions permitting). We can decide as a group the night before.

I'll bring a rope, crampons, and ice tools.

Has anyone taken an Avvy level 1 course? I'm nearly done putting together an AT setup.

I'm staying at the Conway Hostel from Friday night (2/15) to Wed morning (2/20). Flight info:
DCA --> Manchester, NH Fri 2/15 arriving at 10:30am.
Manchester --> DCA departing at 5pm.

I'm renting a car as well. If anyone needs a ride to/from Conway around those times, let me know.

Ty, I am trying to be free for that weekend and I could join you. When are you coming back to DC?

Is anyone driving or wanting to ride with me?

Hi everyone. As some of you may have noticed I will not be able to attend this event. I really wish I could, but other events have precluded my attendance. I'm still here to help plan and make some suggestions on routes, guides, lodging, etc. Please let me know how I can help.

Also looking for climbing partner for Fri., Sat., Sun. if anyone interested. [masked]

    • Annie

I might hitch a ride south with you on Sunday possibly if I don't rent my own vehicle.

I am flying into Manch on Southwest on Friday (15th) night. I have hostel reservations from Sat to Sun, so will be coming up to Conway early Sat morning to meet up with you all. I only ice climbed one day the similar trip last year, so I am very much a beginner. If people are tackling more challenging stuff, I'd be willing to spend a day winter hiking. I will be needing to rent gear, etc. Looking forward to hearing more details on plans.

Hi everyone -- A couple of us are planning on flying from DC to Manchester on Friday night (arriving around 10pm) and driving from there to Conway that night. Were planning on returning the same way on Monday evening (looking at flights that leave Manchester around 6). If youd be interested in joining in these plans let me know! We'll probably be renting an SUV with 4-wheel drive for the snow and will have extra room. Should get us from the hostel to frankenstein easily too. My email is [masked], thanks!

Molly- Ben and I would be interested in joining you; we're looking at flights that arrive/depart around the same time. I tried to email you and it didn't go through- my email is [masked].

OOPS sorry my email is [masked], rachel i'm emailing you now!

Folks this is getting closer. I'm going to try to firm up the details in the coming weeks. As for hostel reservations, everyone making their own probably works best.

Hi everyone, hope you all have great holiday brake. I'm planning my trip and was wondering if there's an option of car pooling/flying together and sharing a car. Let me know, as travelling to nh and back is an issue for me. Does anyone plan on trying ice climbing and then doing the avalanche awareness course on Monday?

      December 30, 2012

Heading to daks instead that weekend. Have fun and be safe!

Are we making a group reservation at the hostel for this (and Feb 1-3) trip, or should we all make out own reservations?

    October 9, 2012

  • Jared

I'm sure what you have is fine. So long as your crampons have good front and secondary points you are good to go. And if there is a problem there is a ton of extra gear and rental gear.

Can I wear my plastic mountaineering boots and mountaineering crampons, or should I rent stiffer boots/crampons?

    September 26, 2012

  • James

Unfortunately I won't be able to make it.

    September 18, 2012

  • Jared

All levels are welcome. There are climbs of all levels from easy top roped climbs to multi-ptich WI 5 climbs.

    September 18, 2012

  • Molly K

I've never done ice climbing but would really like to learn. I'm a moderate rock climber and have done some alpine climbing, but i've heard they're really two different sports. would these ice climbing weekends be the types of events i could go to as a beginner, or would it be recommended i learn elsewhere? No worries if that's the case -- wouldn't want to hold the group back in any way!

    September 17, 2012

    Tentative
