Another hike hosted by Dennis. You know it's hosted by Dennis because *I* would NEVER get tired of driving hundreds of miles for a crazy hike.
Tried of driving long distances to get to a hike, Then you need come try this one . It doesn't have those 3 and 4 thousand footers but this hike will give you a great workout .
This hike has multiple views of Harpers Ferry . It starts out in Loudoun Heights , Va. Has a 1200ft climb with multi views . You pick up the Appalachian trail and follow it across the Shenandoah river 340 bridge into Harpers Ferry ,WV. Follow the AT into beautiful downtown Harpers ferry . Then over the potomac footbridge to the C&O canal and head to the Maryland Heights trail . Then we will do the Maryland Heights trail section . We will enjoy a beautiful view at the overlook of downtown Harpers Ferry . The main ridge at Maryland Heights has the ruins of Union Civil War forts, trenches, gunpowder magazines, and infantry encampments. With most of the circuit having informational signage describing the different ruins. We will then take a side trail ( very steep ) down to the C&O canal and follow it south to the Sandy Hook bridge . A short climb , then we will cross over the bridge back to the parking area.
This hike will be moderate for some and strenuous for others . The hiking pace will depend upon groups abilities . We will cover 12 miles with an elevation gain of 2675ft and with approx. 5000ft of elevation change. Please bring at least 3 litres of water and plenty of snacks. I will have maps and we will go over the route that we will be taking before the hike . We could do a post optional meal if interested.
