Considering their track record of their owners in Asia, I agree 100%. ie Scott Fischer, then Christine Boskoff successive owners of MM, both died on mountains in Asia. A bit too much madness, don't you think?

Hah! I was thought "Mountain Madness" was kind of a bad name for a guiding service ("madness" sounds really reliable and trustworthy, doesn't it?). If anything, they should have ditched the name and let us keep it. Pretty rocking title for a meetup group, if you ask me!

Dear DCMMers,

As you may have already noticed, we've changed the name of our Meetup group from "DC Mountain Madness" to "DC Metro Mountaineers." This was not done by choice. We received a cease-and-desist letter from Mark Gunlogson, President of Mountain Madness, Inc. a Seattle corporation that trademarked the name Mountain Madness. Mr. Gunlogson claimed we were infringing his trademark and demanded that we remove all references to "Mountain Madness" from all our pages within 48 hours.

We weren't thrilled about giving up our name, but were also not quite ready for a protracted legal dispute. I'd like to thank Adam and Jared for their in-house legal expertise, and for simply being good sports, always ready to pitch in for the group.  After this experience, I know that I will NEVER look to organize a trip through Mr Gunlogson's company, Mountain Madness, Inc. They weren't particularly friendly, although we were very forthright from the start.  We did not mean to infringe on their trademark or cause any confusion; we make no money out of the group. In the end, we explained to them that DCMM represents their core clientele, and that going all legal on us was not the best marketing technique.

As for the new name, we wanted to keep the DCMM acronym and to keep "mountain" in the name, so we decided on DC Metro Mountaineers.  After all, this might even be more descriptive than the old name.

Onward and upward!

Jana
