The long awaited Expedition Skills Seminar on Rainier (think Denali Prep) is here!
Tania has put out a feeler for this a long time ago on our message board, and seems like there's plenty of interest -- so let's do it!
Emmons is a more advanced route up Mt Rainier than the Disappointment Cleaver (normal route). In addition to the summit attempt, we will train in mountaineering techniques: besides rest-stepping, pressure-breathing and self arrest with an ice axe, we will also do crevasse rescue, anchor setting, fixed lines ascention, and ice climbing. We will camp on a glacier, not sleep at Camp Muir huts, so you'll get a flavor for living on the ice and snow that Denali trip entails. Tania and I have reserved our spots for a six-day seminar on July 18-23, 2010. The deposit is $300, the full cost $1,865 (pricey, but you get the best instruction from the best people in business, the likes of Ed Viesturs, Dave Hahn, Melissa Arnott, etc.) You also need to factor in airfare to Seattle/Tacoma and back, ground transport (we'll figure out the car rentals when we have the numbers), and a few nights logdging at the base camp in Ashford (there's a bunk room that we can reserve, but again, more on that later). So you should budget $2,200 plus airfare -- good if you have those FF miles! At this point, you only need 25K miles on United for IAD-SEA-IAD roundtrip on those dates. We will plan on arriving a day early (July 17) and departing the day after we are done (July 24). Flight details to follow.
We asked the RMI to hold 8 spots for us for a week until we get them deposits. You cannot RSVP "Yes" without paying the $300 deposit. Only 6 remaining spots!
The full payment is due April 19, 2010, so you have 5 months to get the rest of the money together (about $316/month).
However, we will only give RMI the number in our party, not your names, until May 19 (60 days before the trip), at which point you sign waiver, send in medical information, etc. What this means that if for some reason you change your mind, you have until May 19 to find someone to take your spot. After that date, you lose the money. (Note that until April 19, you only lose the $300 deposit.)

This is going to be absolutely AWESOME! If you come to the home photo night this Friday, I will be showing some of my photos from Rainier two years ago... It's really, really breathtaking! (In fact, our main DCMM photo is a sunrise on Rainier, with the Little Tahome piercing through the clouds...)
