Long-term campaign

Hello All: I'm looking to either run or play in a long-term campaign (relatively speaking). Specifically I'm looking for a group to that plays once or twice a month at most. It would great if the group comprises of other players who are willing to take the GM-chair every once in awhile. I have a pretty decent selection of RPGs but favor the fantasy, science-fiction, or science-fantasy genres, but I would be willing to pick up a game if the group wants to try something else. I live in Herndon and would like to travel no further than Arlington or Alexandria if possible, plus I can host the occasional game. If interested feel free to post here or send me a message, thanks!

.Hey folks, I've decided to bow out of the campaign. My goal is to run some one-night games to try out some new systems; look for an announcement soon if you’re interested. It was great meeting everyone, and I hope to game with you again!

Dorian-- great job with Dungeon World! The game was a blast; hope we can return to it someday.

If this Sat isn't a possibility then Feb 15 would be my next best date. Also, for those interested there is a calendar on Obsidian Portal that is really useful to keep track of days people are available at a glance. If you want an invite let me know. One more thing, just a quick survey: how many of you have other games that you are currently running/ playing in?

I'm actually free on both the 1st and the 8th, but in future months (Feb 15th and April 12th) it so happens that I'll be busy if we start the bi-weekly cycle on the 1st. That said, don't let that drive the schedule if it's more convenient for the rest of the group.

Hey all, tomorrow's the day! I hope everybody's got their goodies!!! Hey Dave, i'll get you a gmail account for the round robin group, sorry i missed that thread. Additionally, what all apps do we have? I've got access to Hero Lab, which is pretty neat for the systems it supports (though you have to pay for additional systems as you need them), and a few pdfs of cardstock goodies. i'll have cd's burned for anyobdy who would like them.

Gregg, will you have Wifi that we can you at your place?

Hey all, just had a thought. Since it seems like there are umpteen different game pitches being thought of, would it be feasible for us all to use the 18th as an "elevator pitch" kind of day? everyone brings their game, give it the five minute synopsis or intro, wash, rinse, repeat? because I can see that 4 hours just ain't gonna be long enough :) which in this case, seems to be a very good problem to have.

Maybe we can create a calendar of games - of course the con to that is that you might go a while between a specific instance of a game, and everybody starts confusing Darth Gnarlock of the Hill Orcs with Ajunta Pall, Sith apprentice and level 1 Wizard. See, I'm already confused ! :) The pro of course is that everybody gets to run, and we can work out gaming styles, and improve our games.

Or , we could just game "Showtime at the Apollo" style - if your game sucks, Sandman Slim shuffles on stage and drags your ass away with a big hook :P

    January 12, 2014

    • Dave W.

Once we get an actual game decided I'll post as a reoccurring meetup. NP. We might want to try Noble Knight Games for sponsors hip.

      January 12, 2014

  • Bill S.

This thread certainly caught my eye. I'm glad to know there are others interested in a long term campaign and not just in pop runs.

I'm not sure if the group has come to a consensus on which type of game they are playing. My preference is fantasy RPGs and looking to play 1x month.

Depending on the level of interest, I can GM a home grown fantasy RPG called Unlimited. It's been play tested for over 15 years. So it's not something that was just thrown together last month. And I can host as well. (Alexandria) However, would like to schedule that in advance since there are a few other gamers not in this group that would like to attend.

I plan on attending the 18th, so I can get to know everyone and see what shakes out.

Do you think we need subgroups per genre type? Just a thought.

Either one works for me...G+ Community?

      January 10, 2014

    • Dave W.

I just started a G+ Community called "Round Robin Gaming" - so if people have a G+ account please let me know and I'll add you.

      January 10, 2014

  • Dave W.

Well...I sent out an email a few days ago in hopes that we would have a collaborative spitball session to figure out what we wanted to play next Saturday. I got a few responses but they all seemed to be directly addressed to just me. As such I figured I would just hop back on here (meetup) and take a quick poll. Answer on this string if you would please so we can keep the conversations aligned to topic. Thanks!

So I'll start simple with asking what genre people want to play?

    Sci/Fi
    Fantasy
    Superhero
    Horror
    Modern

    1 · January 9, 2014

    • Gregg B.

      Dave-- what is High Space?

      January 9, 2014

    • Dave W.

High Space is a hard sci/fi space opera game using Savage Worlds mechanics. I've been sifting through it the past few days and like what I see - especially using SW, it's easy to pick up with little learning curve insofar as rules go. Think of it like Traveller meets Firefly, but really you can as 'hard' in the science as you want.

      January 10, 2014

  • Joey

I'm down for whatever, but my personal preference would be super hero, followed by fantasy, sci/fi.

I would love to run/ play Iron Kingdoms or 13th Age. If someone is running then I would say Star Wars:EotE, Numenera, or Shadowrun 5e.

      1 · January 6, 2014

I'd like to try 13th Age or Savage Worlds Fantasy.

Oh, whew, I thought I got "voted off the island!" hahahah. I've updated to attending. thanks again.

    3 · January 4, 2014

  • Gregg B.

Hey folks, this is weird, but bear with me. When I updated the date and place for the meetup, it kept the attendance status for the old date rather than resetting it. So I reset everyone to "not attending." Please edit your status if you can make it. Sorry for any inconvenience!

    1 · January 4, 2014

  • Dave W.

So now that we have a date/time the question now is what do we want to play? From reading these posts it sounds like we have a few options. I can run my Savage World fantasy game or my Hero sysyem Champions game. Joey has stated he has a 2e Mutants and Masterminds game he can run. Are there others we can throw in the mix for a poll?

    January 4, 2014

  • Gregg B.

Dave's Savage Worlds game (Fate's Crossing, 19 Jan) has 4 players signed up, and this one has 6 However, three of those players have signed up for both, which really yields 9 people with interest in a long-term campaign (of some sort.) Would it make sense to merge the two ideas? The one potential delta I see is that Dorian mentioned multiple GM's and science fiction as an option (both ideas which I really like). Thoughts?

    1 · January 4, 2014

    • Nelthar

This sounds like a good idea to me.

      January 4, 2014

    • Dave W.

I could do FC for this group and shag the other posting, np. I would let the other players who signed up know what's going on however. That is, of course if people want to do fantasy instead of sci fi and if they want to play Savage Worlds?

      January 4, 2014

  • Joey

ack! okay since it sounds like we're cancelling for today, how about we try to get together on Saturday, Jan 18? I personally have other games scheduled for the 5th, and the 11th and 12th, tentatively.

Additionally, if anyone is interested, please feel free to check out my M&M game at Obsidian Portal - the direct link is https://thedirectorate.obsidianportal.com/

i've reset a lot of stuff, but there's plenty of player info, house rules, etc., available. if you're interested, starting characters are PL 8, with a fluff of 5 to 10 points, 15 for good character backgrounds. If you don't have the M&M 2nd ed. book, I can hook you up with an electronic copy and some other neat goodies.

Hope to see everyone soon :)

Thanks for responding, everyone. My preferred game days would be on the weekend due to school and work, unfortunately I can't game during the week. Also, Crystal City is a bit far for me to travel, but there may be others who are closer to your location, Joey. The games that I have and would like to play/ run are as follows: Pathfinder, Iron Kingdoms, Star Wars: EotE, Shadowrun 5e, Numenera, and a homebrew campaign combining Pathfinder and D20 Modern that I'm currently working. Do any of these sound like something anyone would be interested in running/ playing? Gregg said he could host and possibly run something.

I've been on a sci-fi kick recently, so I'd lean in that direction (not heavily enough to insist on it, mind). Definitely a fan of shadowrun, to be sure. I'll also bump Traveller as well, because it's rad.

      January 3, 2014

  • Joey

Here's a suggestion for location, then. Has anyone ever been to Crystal City Metro Stop at the Landing? If you've ever been to one of the Beer and Board Games meetups on Friday nights, you're already familiar. it's an open area right beside a Subway shop and another restaurant. they've got plenty of room, access to food, free WiFi, etc. and it is available as long as the station is open.

Can I suggest everyone who is interested meet there for the first go around, maybe we can all bring a few games to demo and decide what we want to play? I've actually got an M&M demo built and ready to go, if that sounds fun.

    January 2, 2014

    • Joey

hahaha, yeah, i'll roll to hit in 3 inches of snow! no, the shops at crystal city are indoors and accesible directly from the metro stop. elevators lead to the parking which is also covered, if anyone is driving instead of taking the metro train.

      January 2, 2014

    • Nelthar

That's a bit of a hike for me but should be a decent drive. I'd rather drive than get to Vienna station and do the long trip and back. Have you though of a day we might meet up yet?

      January 2, 2014

  • Gregg B.

Hi Dorian, I live in Herndon and can host (I have a large basement.) I can GM science fiction or low-level fantasy. My fav games are Fading Suns, Trav, Stars w/o Number, Star Wars Saga Edition. My fav systems are Hero, Gurps, M&M, True 20.

I live in Fairfax in my own home, and it is perfect for gaming. The parking is free and plentiful, and I am currently running a long-standing campaign. Check out http://zhalindor.com/4e/ We generally play twice a month on Monday evenings.

I *can* host but I doubt anyone wants to travel to Gainesville. :) I've got several ideas for games (one fantasy and one superhero currently), but like PM said...the WHEN is the obstacle for me. My gaming time is usually on the weekends due to my weekly work schedule.

Dorian... like you I am looking for a group that meets 2x/month and is steady. Also, I'm looking for a long term commit, not just a series of one shots. I can chair the GM chair with no problem and I have a friend who is also looking if you want me to pass along the message. Let me know.
