I'm writing to update you with the results of the planning meeting on Sunday, December 19th and the creation of a new leadership team for the meet-up group formerly known as, the DC Metro Spoken Word and Poetry Group. We're planning some big changes and a lot of growth in 2011, but I would first like to credit and honor the founding organizer, Mei Nizyama. It is due to Mei?s leadership, hard work, and dedication that the group achieved over 50 meet-ups and grew to over 130 members! Mei set a perfect foundation for us to tailor our commitment to writing and sharing poetry toward a specific goal: Using poetry as an agent for social justice.
You may have already noticed that we have changed the name of the group to the DC Poetry Project. We believe this name will not only generate excitement about our group and where it's going, but is also consistent with the proactive approach to poetry that we seek to employ in the upcoming year and beyond. Poetry is more than just words on a page; it is a call to action. We hope that you will stick with us through these changes and use the DC Poetry Project as a tool to explore your own voice and how it can change the world. Please stay tuned for further updates, as we will be announcing more big changes in the near future.
This will include an open mic event on January 6, 2011 at 8:00pm the Library Bar and Grill (www.thelibraryon12th.com).
