We do Scrum but...

Many organizations say that they are now Agile and are adopting Scrum. They are also adapting Scrum to fit their unique circumstances. This results in what is know as ScrumBut.

Scrumbut [skruhmbut] noun.
1. A person engaged in only partial Agile project management or development methodologies
2. One who engages in either semi-agile or quasi-waterfall development methodologies.
3. One who adopts only SOME tenants of the SCRUM methodology.
4. In general, one who uses the word "but" when answering the question "Do you do SCRUM?". Example: We use Scrum, but we have these unique circumstances, so we had to modify Scrum so it works here.

Sounds familiar? Is this good or bad? Join us to discuss the modifications you have done, the pros and cons of these changes, the impact of not addressing them, and possible solutions.

All: Regarding the GAO report on Effective Practices and Fed Challenges in Applying Agile Methods, I want to make sure that I manage expectations and that this report is not the silver bullet to getting a contractee to overhaul a waterfall based artifact contract. It is a starting point and something that can hopefully help some/all with their individual contracts. If you have any feedback on the report please reach out to Claudia Fletcher (I am working on getting her contact information). I know one of the attendees caught the incorrect use of self-directed teams and that it should be self-organized. The GAO report also referenced a OMB report that is probably of interest to some of you. The specific report was called, "Contracting Guidance to Support Modular Development". I haven't read it yet, and you may already be aware of it. Below is the link to the report.

Brian - Thank you for sending the report link. This will be very useful.
Fadi - Thank you for an enjoyable and informative meeting. We had a side discussion at our table last night about Agile Management technologies that people are using, whether something specifically designed for the purpose, or a combination of spreadsheets and group-ware sites like Google and SharePoint. I would like to see a future meeting on this and hear about what others are doing - pros/cons.

Great facilitation and facility. Thank you. This was my first meeting and I will definitely be attending more. It is great to share knowledge implementing agile in the workplace. Below is a link to the GAO report that I mentioned. Claudia Fletcher is the author and she gave a presentation on the paper at the Ajile meetup that I went to last Thursday in Annapolis Junction. One of the main takeaway's is that this is a great document to provide to contractee's that may help them update and/or generate contracts that are more agile friendly (i.e. just right documentation).

Already looking forward to the next meetup. Thank you again.

Fadi is an excellent facilitator who keeps the meetup group focused on the topic. This scrum user group has good mix of people who are new and experienced in agile.
