Exercise Hike-Billy Goat Trail "A" 2:15pm & Irish Inn after....

Exercise Hike on Billy Goat Trail 'A'!

This is a moderate to strenuous trail depending on your fitness level. It is about 5 miles.

We will stop for the views but only briefly.  Bring snacks and water for the hike if you need them.

Plan for around 1 1/2 -2 hrs.  After the Billy Goat trail we can stop at the waterfall lookout point on the way back to the picnic table area. It is quite beautiful and definitely worth seeing. Note, this will add about 30 minutes to the time. It is a great photo spot!

After the hike we can continue socializing with a some food and cheer at the Irish Inn at Glen Echo.

Disclaimer: The general pace at which we hike is too fast for some and not fast enough for others.  I can't promise everyone will be happy.  But I sure will try! ;)

Bring water, snacks, gloves, sunscreen, camera and optional cool sunglasses. Dress appropriately for the weather.

Note: Unlike most popular hiking trails, Billy Goat Trail 'Section A', offers up lots of rock scrambles around or over boulders, plenty of rocky terrain, a short but steep scramble up a cliff face, and heaps of breathtaking views of the Potomac River.

Come on out and climb the boulders with us for good times! What is rock scrambling you might ask? Anytime you have to use your hands to get over rocks or steep parts, we call it rock scrambling. No special gear is necessary for scrambling (gloves optional) and the scramble is only a portion of the hike.

Note: Sorry but the park rules are there are no dogs allowed on trail "A"

***MEETING LOCATION ***

Go to the main entrance of Great Falls on the Maryland Side.

Pay Ranger Rick $5 or get an annual park pass for $20 which is good for both VA & MD.

Meet us by the refreshment stand near the entrance by the parking lot. Please note, the refreshment stand is closed for the season.

We are leaving for the hike at 2:30PM.  Please be on time so you don't get left behind.

If you are left behind, go take a hike! ;)

If you can't find us, are lost, or just want to say hi, call my cell:[masked]-9948.

Texting is best as sometimes the service is not so great there for phone calls.

Since I make this a small group, please update your RSVP if you are unable to attend.

Thank you!

They have closed the entrance to the park.the only thing i can suggest is to park by old anglers and walk to the second entrance of tbe billygoat. It is to tbe left on the tow path just padt the foot bridge across the canal.

It's a beautiful day for this hike, and it's a really great hike. I'm on the waitlist with more than 20 others. Johanna has good reasons for not taking a huge group -- the trail is narrow in places and huge groups are a nuisance to others on this hike (trust me - among other things, the cliff is a bottleneck -- single-file and people hike the loop both directions). And she's right about pacing - it's a very different hike depending on whether you reall move it or go slower and linger. I'm hoping to show up even though I'm on the waitlist, because this is probably the last best warm weekend day for this hike. Maybe if too many show we can break up into two groups? Just a thought. BTW, if you miss this, in spite of what I said above, this trail is gorgeous year round, and in many ways is better in the dead of winter, because it's *much* less crowded. I'm sure there will be a lot of people out today. Hope to make it and see ya'll.

It's going to be in the mid 60's today.
If you wear shorts for the hike and plan to come to dinner after at the Irish Inn, make sure you bring some pants and a jacket for when the temperature drops.

Amy, It is likely there will be no shows. It is difficult to control without payment and even then there are no guarantee everyone will show up.
I do like to have a smallish group to keep the pace up. Especially since it will be dark by 5pm.
Having said that, you will not be turned away or flogged if you are on the wait list and just show up. ;)

What if you *like* to be flogged? (I'm not speaking for ME, mind you.)

hi, scrambling up a cliff face sounds scary (but doable)... is it a loop trail, so we don't have to go back down the same way?
thanks, especially for the afternoon departure time
