MO: Ramsay's Draft-Wild Oak Trail, 40-ish miles

***Please note that this is an expanded and updated trip description with much more in the way of detail about what we're going to be doing. Please familiarize yourself with it. Print or acquire the maps so that you're fully prepared.***

Note that I'm pushing the start time back from 8am, Friday to noon, Friday. No need for us to get out there too early.

After we meet up at Vienna, noon, on Friday, 4/5, we'll drive out to the trailhead, following this route. We're walking a lollipop loop, so there's no need for a shuttle. We should be hiking by 3pm. At present, the weather seems good.

Friday afternoon, we'll climb the draft (about 6.5 miles) and camp at one of the beautiful spots at Hiner Springs. The climb up the draft should be beautiful and watery. Be prepared for many creek crossings, hostile vegetation, and insects.

Seriously, the creek crossings may be challenging. It's conceivable we may have to use a multi-person method.  You will get wet.  Bring a headnet.  Be prepared for ticks and all that business as they should be hatching soon.  Bring 3-4L of water capacity, as parts of the Wild Oak Trail are dry.

Saturday, we'll set out early and walk the great majority of the 26-mile Wild Oak Trail CCW. This could be quite a challenging day, but I'll keep the final mileage to just over 20 miles. Most likely, this will mean we'll be camping at Camp Todd, a broad spot with plenty of water, but some of the disadvantages of being near a road.

Sunday, we'll return to the cars by one of the ridge routes that surrounding Ramsays Draft (almost certainly the northern one, as I haven't walked it before). We may try to fit in Jeremys Run, as I hear it's pretty cool.

I'll try to get precise splits, but you should be prepared for some walking, perhaps 6.5-21-14, for a total weekend in the low 40s. And I'm guessing. And you know what my margin of error is. ;)

For maps, familiarize yourself with the Ramsays Draft East and West loops at Mid-Atlantic. The best map I have for Wild Oak is this Nat Geo one. I'll get a scan in of that as I look for a better one.

This trip is open only to those who have member status or above with us--it'll be tough, but rewarding. Trip size is limited to 10.

One of my favorite hikes in the mid-Atlantic so far. The evergreen woods and circular ridgewalk on the Wild Oak Trail were often beautiful, and something different for around here. The 360 degrees of views rocked. All seven of us definitely got our exercise-- I'm including the two pooches. Thanks to everyone for the laughs and good times.

  • Joffrey Peters

Alright, it sounds like I'm not taking anyone, so I may as well just head out myself and see you all at the trail head.

You guys will be at Vienna at noon? Will you stop and get some lunch on the way out?

      April 5

    • Doug Swiatocha

Yes, Vienna at noon. And I need to pick up my dog so we can get food then too.

I'll be leaving in a few to go get Denise and go to Big Schloss. See everyone else at Ramsay's Draft. Call me if there are issues. [masked]. MM

Weather is looking pretty good ...

Looks like the rain should have passed by the time we reach the trailhead. Should be more or less perfect hiking conditions!

    Hi Michael,

Doug and I plan to meet at Vienna and drive out to the trailhead. So it's fine if you drive out separately, as far as I'm concerned.

Cool. I'm still trying to decide exactly what I'm doing Friday morning and what order I'm doing it in. Thanks, Dan and Doug for setting this up.

I'm actually going to sit this one out. I had a touch of runners knee from Massanutten that I thought had cleared up, but my knee was complaining on my ride into work today, so I'm going to take some more time to rest it up.

    April 2

    • Daniel

Sorry to hear that, Brian. Feel better soon.

      April 2

    • Michael Martin

Rest up Brian. That's the only thing for runners knee. We'll see you on the BFT in a week or so.

Hey everyone ... Here is the reference map for Ramsays Draft / Wild Oak Trail for this coming weekend ...

It's based on the Nat Geo map. Please print out a copy, familiarize yourselves with it, and bring a copy along. Thanks. MM

    Hi Doug,

I wouldn't mind the dog, if he/she wouldn't mind me...

Would you be at the Vienna Metro north parking lot at noon?

    Thanks for the offer.

    Dan

    • Doug Swiatocha

Yes, I can be there at noon. Or anywhere west of there if that's easier for you. I'll send you a message with my number.

      April 2

  • Doug Swiatocha

I'll be driving as well since I'll be bringing my dog. If someone doesn't mind riding with a dog I can drive 2 others.

    April 1

  • Joffrey Peters

I'm happy to drive. I can probably comfortably seat 3 others.

Finally, it looks like we're going to get spring for one of these trips!

So, why aren't you signed up, Booty-Less? Is it the Friday? This really will be a great thru-hike of the area.

    • Carrie Graff

I thought I did! My bad if not...doing it now!

      January 26

  • Denise Murray

I will plan on this for CERTAIN, pending any drastic changes in my health status U - Turn, on which I will keep you posted. And, I'm thinking you're really saying 50ish miler (?). Haha! I'm looking forward to this if I'm able to go, definitely!! :)

    January 23

    • Michael Martin

Yay, Twinkle Toes! Actually, in this very rare case, I believe I can be fairly accurate in my mileage prediction. Should be about 43 miles. Not entirely sure how the splits will work out, though ... I've walked all this before, in different configurations. U-Turn
