DAY HIKE: Signal Knob area, 21 miles, 5000 feet elevation gain

  • February 16 · 6:30 AM

As I won't be able to take a whole long weekend off and enjoy possible snow loads in upstate NY or NH I propose a day hike for Saturday Feb 16th.

It'll be in the Signal Knob area 1.5 h drive from DC. Covering 21 miles with a modest (well, that depends on the perspective I guess) elevation gain of 5000 feet this could be a good hike for people who do not know if they can make 20 miles per day. The figure 8 loop also would allow people to stop hiking after 15 miles if necessary.

Here's the map:

We will maintain a brisk pace, with a few stops to take in the views.

We would meet somewhere in DC or in the suburbs depending on who will join. As I don't own a car I would appreciate a ride or I can get a Zipcar for the day. By signing up please let us know if you can offer a ride or need one.

Weather will be going to be on the cloudy side, with high temps around 40F. Be prepared for some snow on the ground (microspikes etc) and from above (shell). It might be windy.

I will open that hike to everyone but I will require you to answer a few questions when you RSVP. This is mandatory! After all, everyone should enjoy the event, and I need to make sure everyone has the abilities to do so.

Good hike in a new area with a small but awesome group of people. The unexpected gorgeous snow cover was an extra treat.

Excellent - snow made the upper elevations a winter wonderland.

If nobody needs a ride, I'll probably just head straight for the trailhead as well.

I will meet you at Elizabeth Furnace parking at 0800. As I am probably slower than the rest of you, I may stop after the 15-mile loop.

Something came up last minute and I won't be able to make it. Have fun!

My grandmother isn't doing well, and I am taking a last min trip to FL to see her. Hopefully I will make the next one. I was looking forward to it.

Kelly, I hope your grandmother feels better. We'll see you out on the trail another time, soon, I'm sure.

I can drive two or three more from Vienna Metro or Centreville park and ride.

Sorry, I'm doing a horrible job at multitasking, in my mind Doug's email came from tony. I'm by u st and can easily meet in DuPont.

I'm sooo excited! I'd love a ride (meaning I really need a ride, I don't have a car). Tony - do you still live in the same spot? I'm super close and would love to just meet you there if you could give me a lift...

Any further details on the transportation planning and the choice of Massanutten parking area? There are several parking areas that serve the Rte 678 trailheads to the big loop.

    Dogs are welcome!

Man, this group is going to the dogs! I can't speak to Holger's preference, but we usually like and allow dogs on trips. It's important that the dogs, too, work up to big mileage. Vienna is a good westerly metro stop to swing by.

I will be bringing my dog. My SUV can seat 3 or 4 passengers. Dog will be in the back. I definitely prefer a meeting point in Virginia -- I can swing by any of the Virginia Metro stations. Or just meet at trailhead: Eliz Furnance?

Also, if people need rides I can drive 2 people if they don't mind sitting with a dog.

Can I bring my dog along? He's done a 15 mile hike recently with no problems and runs about 8 miles every day with me. GWNF allows dogs off leash so I would prefer that if no one minds.

I'm a maybe for this one, but I'd have to meet you at the trailhead. Will update a little later in the week.
