LM: Hike Across Maryland via the Green Ridge in Western Maryland

Rumor has it that this trip is a secret gem out in western Maryland, so we're going to find out!

Carrie P and I have been chatting about this one, so I figured I might as well get it planned out. From Grosvenor Metro Station (not Vienna)--where we'll meet up at 8am Friday morning--we'll roll out and drive this route.  We should reach the visitors center about 10am or so.  Once we have our back country permits issued ($10 per night for up to six people, $1 per person per night additional above six), we'll start walking for the long weekend.

With our cars parked at the visitors center, we'll hike south on the Deep Run / Big Run Trail (7 miles), then along the Log Roll Trail (4.5 miles).  After that, we'll have a long stretch of C&O Canal (17-ish miles) before taking the Long Pond Trail (about 9 miles).  The brochure says that this loop is about 42 miles, but I'm not getting quite that.

At that point, if we've covered this ground fast, we *could* add on a 6-mile out and back to the PA State Line.  This could be an option, as it would get us to about 50 miles.  People wouldn't have to do it if they were tired, but it would license you to say that you walked across Maryland in a weekend, twice.  I don't see any options but for walking this trail out and back.

So, the splits for the 40-ish mile trip might be 11.5 / 17.5 / 9 ... The 50-ish mile trip might be 17.5 / 21 / 11.  Those miles on the C&O Canal are going to go really fast.  I'll keep working on these splits.  Let me know if you have preferences.

There are an abundance of places for us to camp, including Adirondacks shelters, established campgrounds, and backcountry sites.

If you want to order maps, the one I'm using is here.  Might also check out the C&O Canal information, as it plays a part in this.

I'm excited to be doing this trip, as I don't think it is walked all that often.

This was a really great hike and an initiation for me into the world of ultra light hiking. I learned so much from everyone. It was a great group with a cool dynamic. The hike was perfect--a little challenging for this newbie. Lots of stream crossings and switchbacks. Some parts of the trail really hadn't been used much yet this season. The canal made for a nice break and the hiker/biker campsite was really the best. Thanks, Michael, for leading it, and thanks everyone for making it such a wonderful trip.

Absolutely awesome trip. Good scrambles, perfect weather, good company. Michael set a clean, swift pace and distilled priceless knowledge of how he packs light and hikes hard. A small group roared back to civilization for an early exit Sat night, but were treated to an ad-hoc stream crossing and arguably the friendliest dog in Maryland (had to be there).

Thanks, everyone, for making this such an excellent trip! We had a great group of fit backpackers, and a route that was a lot more fun than I would have guessed. Excellent trip, good weather, and great company! Hope to see you all on the trail again soon! Trip and photos up in the coming days! MM

HOLY CRAP WAS THIS A BLAST! My anaconda don't want not hun(you shoulda been there for that one hahaha!)! Six of us met at Green Ridge, many of us never met before, and in no time we were gellin'. Trails had a good balance of fun techy sections, and some smooth trails under a shady canopy. The C&O canal was new to me and surprisingly fun for a rail trail,...lots of snake out for a sun bath. Oh! And the ticks! Breaks included body inspections for ticks. Water was everywhere, some very good campsites to be had as well! I can't express enough how much fun I had this weekend. We really lucked out on so many levels; Michael was an excellent guide and train driver, the gang was super fun and happy, weather was on our side, and the post hike bar/restaurant turned out be a palm tree oasis among stip malls. Thanks guys!!

To clarify even further about the route ... The total loop I have set up for us is about 40 miles even. We walk about a mile in on the Pine Lick Trail, head south on the Deep Run Trail about 7 miles, do 4.5 miles more on the Log Roll trail, reach the C&O Canal, and walk about 5 more miles to reach the Paw Paw Campground. Doing that on Friday gets us to 17.5 for Friday, about 25% on the canal (very easy). On Saturday, we'd do about 12.5 miles along the canal, and then do about 4.5 miles on the Long Pond Trail to reach the Adirondacks Shelter, so about 17 miles. To reach the cars that night, you'd need to do 5 extra miles for a 22 mile day. That's a substantial day, though almost half is on the canal.

Alternatively, you could just wake early in the morning (DC UL starts early, anyway) and knock out those last 5 miles fresh. Those of us with less pressing schedules on Sunday will have to make a call mid-morning about whether we want to an additional 6 miles out and back on the Pine Lick Trail to touch the PA order. That will be quite optional, and I'm not sure I will want to do it myself. My wife and I may want to see _Star Trek_. ;)

And ... those of you who know me know that any mileage estimates I make are quite ... uh ... estimate-y. They're in the ballpark, most of the time ... But I have subjected people to 10 extra miles from time to time. :) ... I do think I'm fairly accurate here.

So, Leia and Evan, it would probably be more relaxing (and fun) for you guys to spend Saturday night on the trail and just leave at dawn Sunday morning. But, as you like ... MM

Michael; I'd love to join you guys. I need to be at work Sunday AM though. Is there a 40ish mile version I could work in that ends Sat PM or Sun AM?

    May 11, 2013

    • Evan L.

Yes. I just need to be back in NoVa by noon Sunday -

We could probably make it happen, one way or another. Sign up, and shoot me a gear list. MM

  • andrea

Did you guys decide to do the 40 or 50 mile?

    May 10, 2013

    • Michael M.

@ Andrea ... We're going to hike the 40 miler first. When we reach the cars on Sunday, we'll determine if people want to hike any further, based on the time, probably. Some of Saturday's miles will go by very fast, since they're on the canal, but I'm not sure. This is a new route for us. Are you interested? Have you been getting e-mail from me? Might check your spam folder.

Just a reminder that we're a little over a week out from this trip! I hope everyone is still in. We'll go into active planning mode this weekend, but it shouldn't be too complicated!

I can actually meet you at the visitor's center as long as the vehicles cooperate and I have some money & appropriate hiking drawers. Hahaha!
