LM: Women's Backpack at Otter Creek Wilderness

And now for something completely different....

DC UL is kicking off its series of backpacks for our female members with this jaunt to Otter Creek. Good for beginners interested in testing their gear and their limits, we’ll have an easy 16 miles for the weekend. The plan is to head out early Saturday morning from the Vienna metro to Otter Creek Wilderness (Mylius Trailhead).

(UPDATED ROUTE AS OF 9/5): Our route on Saturday is about four to five miles long with the biggest climb at the beginning and about three crossings of Otter Creek. We're aiming to get at nice campsite along Otter Creek, giving us some time to enjoy the swimming holes and other nearby trails. Sunday, we’ll have a longer day with about 10 to 11 miles back to the cars.

Those participating should take a look at this map to familiarize themselves with the route. Also, note that this is typically shorter than most of our trips, so it is a great opportunity for new members to get out on the trail, meet others in the group, and test your skills.

Trip size will be limited to eight. If this is your first trip with the group, please send me your gear list. I’ll be happy to review and make suggestions about ways to lighten your load.

Hope you can join us.

Thanks, Ladies for fantasstic trip! As promised I did find the news on butt stabber. It turns out that he does have preference on young woman's butt. Beware he's still out there... http://www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/Serial-Butt-Stabber-Sought-in-Fairfax-County-126151323.html

If you wanted a break from this week's sweltering D.C. weather, you're certainly getting one for this weekend. The forecast now has us dipping below 40 for Saturday night. Still, it will be lovely temperatures on both (sunny!) days for walking along the trails.

Make sure you guys get lots of photos! At the Purple Fiddle and elsewhere!

And the weather is looking good for this weekend. (In fact, Sunday is described as "sunny and delightful.") Highs in the 60s / 70s during the day, and then dipping to the low 40s at night: http://bit.ly/1b0O9sN

Would anyone be interested in heading to WV on Friday night? My favorite spot in Canaan Valley is on way to Otters Creek (about 45 min from the trailhead) called the Purple Fiddle with great live music and food. A fun band is playing on Friday night at 8:30pm, Jack Grace Band, $10 tix. The Purple Fiddle also has a hostel $20/night then we could grab a nice hearty breakfast and meet the group at the trail head around 11 or 11:30 am. Would be fun :)

Okay! We have three cars in play for Saturday -- my car, Tiffany's, and Rachel's (who will have her two small dogs, but can hold two people). We should be able to squeeze everyone in those cars to caravan out there. A big thank you in advance to the drivers.

    • Alison

Sounds great, thanks Jen and to all drivers. Getting excited for girls weekend...

  • Rachel

About my dogs...Please be honest if you do not want to be around animals. I will respect that. They are very small, and listen to me well. (they are sisters - one is 8 lbs, the other is 16lbs). They love to hike and backpack, but I completely understand that I am on a group trip, and others may want this to be a dog free adventure. I'm okay either way. I have a dog sitter that can stay with them.

    September 5, 2013

  • Jen

Rachel is hoping to bring her two small dogs. As per our DC UL dog policy, we're checking with the group to make sure everyone is okay with having them on the trip. Give a shout if you have any concerns.

Happy Monday to everyone. I was checking out the trails in Otter Creek this weekend, and I'm leaning towards flipping our route. It would give us a shorter day (~five miles) on Saturday that gets us to a nicer campsite and knocks out three of our four river crossings. It also would allow us to bump back our carpool meeting time to 8 a.m. Sunday, however, would be a longer day (~11 to 12 miles) with one decent climb up the Green Mountain Trail. I'll send out an update with more details but did want to give a heads up.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
