LM: Old Loggers Path

Thanks everyone for sticking with us on this.  I blame congress for all the confusion!!!

As of right now, the plan is to hike Old Loggers Path in PA. Will is going to be leading this trip as I don't currently have enough colder-weather gear to have a decent night out in the 40's.  So first note about the change, the weather will be about 10 degrees colder in PA than it will be in Southern VA. Right now there's a 20% chance of rain on Sat, so keep an eye on the weather and be prepared.

The second big change is that you will be meeting at the Grovesnor metro at 8AM. The first metro gets in around 7:50, so we should be okay on time.

The drive is approximately 4  hours.

It is a 27-mile loop, here's the map. I'm still working out the routing/camping, etc. so bear with me for some great adventure and a bit of jockeying the routes.  Also, I don't have a printer handy, so could someone please print me a copy of the map so I have it?

Also, those of you that just joined, please let me know if you have a car, if you are meeting us at the metro and if you have never hiked with me before, a gear list.

PLEASE UPDATE YOUR RSVP if you can't or don't want to attend this hike anymore.

Thanks!!!

Looks like Im on this trip again with Midatlantic backpackers; if i cant find another trip, one mo gan... Anyone GPS the locales of the streams along the path?

    • Michael M.

That was my bad, incidentally. I put the trip together to help out Her Majesty in about 40 minutes and didn't have time to look everything up the way I would usually.

      October 16, 2013

    • Will

No worries at all! Neither of us had a lot of time to research either or we might have caught it. It was my call to go for it, and it was certainly doable by SUV/truck.

What a GREAT trip, thanks Will and Christine! Despite the troubles going into and out of the trail head I had a blast! Sweet ass job to everyone to completing an unexpected 20+ mile day and I hope to see you all on the trails soon. Christine, I wish you the best of luck on your new adventures!

The car shuttle is not arranged, but I will be working on it when I get home from work. Unfortunately I don't have a computer at work to deal with it. Right now, I think we only have 2 cars at the metro for 7 people, which isn't going to work very well. We may need someone who said they didn't want to drive or wants to meet at the trailhead to step up, but I will let you know as soon as I can. Also, if I don't have your gear list and car preference by tonight I will be removing you from the group as I have to be sure we are all able to get there and home safely. Thanks!

    October 11, 2013

    • Kevin S.

Then will one of the cars be able to pick me up in Frederick at 9am? I'd prefer to travel with the group than alone.

      October 11, 2013

    • Kevin S.

No worries Kingsley. Christine and I spoke and figured it out in 5 sec. I'll meet the group in Frederick at the Sheetz, 1600 Rosemont Ave. I'll be there by 9a. We can take 2 or 3 cars for the 8 of us. She likes the Sheetz since it's multi purpose and directly en route. :-) We also figured out maps and directions so we should be all set.

Hi, can someone tell me what the decision is for this? Are you going to PA or VA? If PA i might be interested? Can you describe the trip?

Hi KingsleyC, is this 27 mile loop your tappering for the MCM? :))

PS- Is the car shuttle situation arranged?

    Thanks!!! :)

    October 10, 2013

    • Jimmy

Christine, i'll plan to meet you guys at the metro cited above.

      October 10, 2013

    • Iru

I was also planning to meet you guys at Grosvernor metro at 8, but have no car.

      October 11, 2013

  • Kevin S.

Ok, looks like we're heading north. Would it be possible for me to meet in route in Frederick? I can drive from there and this would save me lots of time. I hope I'm not adding difficulty. I know this trip has been an organization challenge. Thanks to the leaders for sticking with it.

    October 11, 2013

    • KingsleyC

maybe u can just meet the group at trailhead if the metro is too far for u...

      October 11, 2013

    • Kevin S.

Well, the metro is an hour in the wrong direction and the trailhead is 3-4 hours driving alone. Getting picked up in Frederick, MD would be great since there is a McDs a block off the highway on Jefferson St.

      October 11, 2013

  • John C.

OLP was my first backpacking trip ever - I would love to go but my younger son has a soccer tournament this weekend. (Although it will probably be cancelled with the last two days of rain!) Great trail - Rock Run would be an incredible camp site but it's only 6-7 miles from the traditional entry point (Ghost town at Masten, PA). If you guys are doing a 3-day, a clockwise hike would allow you to camp at Rock Run on Sunday evening.

I will be driving from Crystal City if anyone else could use a ride.

    October 10, 2013

      October 10, 2013

  • Jimmy

Hey, just RSVPd for this trip however I need to disclose that I have another trip this weekend that is 90% likely going to be cancelled. Until I find out, if this group gets full and other people want to go, I will gladly give up my spot.

Does this get back on Sunday or Monday?

    October 10, 2013

  • Heather

I have a few South Bound friends thru hiking, you are allowed to hike the Appalachian Trail, however, it is the actual National Parks, like SNP, The Smokies etc; that they are kicking people out of. None have been fined. I would say that the only spot questionable along the route is as said below would be Mt. Rogers.

    October 10, 2013

    • Christine

Hi Heather, thanks for the info, but I don't think its worth the chance since most of the hike will be on Federal land. Also, you're still listed as on the waiting list. Please feel free to update to attending if you are planning to join us as there's definitely a spot open.

      October 10, 2013

  • Christine

I'm going to pose this question to all of you and decide this as a group. The recent news stories have led me to further question the decision of going into a National Park this weekend as citations of up to $250 are being handed out to folks who are illegally entering national parks. Knowing this, are you all still willing to head out on this trip, or should we look for a state park somewhere nearby that we can backpack without fear of retribution?

    October 10, 2013

    • Iru

I could go either to Grosvernor's Metro or Silver Spring Metro whatever works better for those that have a car, just let me know :)

      October 10, 2013

    • kelley

I'm up for either option and can still drive even if to PA.

      October 10, 2013

  • Iru

So, are we finally going to OLP? If that is the case is anyone thinking to go from Grosvernor Metro and can give me a ride?I can be there at 8 and would be happy to share cost. Thanks a lot!

    October 10, 2013

  • kelley

Hi - I just RSVP'd for this but am unclear whether folks are heading back on Sunday or Monday? I'm looking for a weekend backpacking trip that extends through Monday with the holiday weekend. If so I'm in, and have an extra space in my tent if anyone wants to shared.

    1 · October 10, 2013

    • kelley

Fabulous! Thanks, Will. I live near Vienna and can drive if needed - will add that to one of the message strings below. I'm also happy to share my tent with any other ladies who'd prefer a lighter load.

I am planning to go to Vienna Metro station. I don't have a car so if it would be possible to carpool from there and share cost I would really appreciate it. Christine I will send you my gear list tonight.

    October 6, 2013

    • kelley

Hi All, I just joined this trip and will be meeting everyone at Vienna. I'd like to carpool, and can also drive if needed. I can fit 3 in my car comfortably, but whoever sits shotgun will need to be my navigator (unless you want to grab your GPS Kingsley ;).

Really wanted to do Greyson's - we'll get it in one day. I have done the OLP, so I think I will pass on this one and go visit my boyfriend instead who has been bugging me for weeks to visit. It is a pretty easy route, so enjoy and I hope you have lovely colors.

  • Michael M.

You guys have a great trip, whatever trail you decide to do! I'm headed for what looks like a several day cold shower on the Standing Stone Trail. I'm sorry the shut-down is affecting this trip, but what can you do?

    October 10, 2013

  • Kevin S.

Hey All, Just throwing this out there. I have a few 2-person "just add water" dinners in my pantry. If anyone is interested in sharing meals I'd be happy to split. I'll cook one night for you and you cook the other night for me.
    Anyone?? Anyone??
Ps. I'm also planning to try out a new DIY plastic tarp. So, if that fails miserably, I'm hoping I can bunk with someone.... just in case.
    Thanks, Kevin

    • Hollis

If any are vegetarian, I would consider it.

      October 9, 2013

    • Kevin S.

Bummer! I have three 2-person meals. All have chicken or beef. Sorry!

      October 9, 2013

  • Michael M.

Just a friendly reminder that, if you have the rank of member or higher, you should pay your $10 annual fee before doing this hike (Matt). :)

    October 8, 2013

  • Christine

Just to clarify... the decision has been made to complete this hike regardless of the congressional funding situation. If the federal area is still closed, we will be completing the same route, just starting at Massie Gap, through the state park area. If there is a funding bill, we will be parking at Grindstone campground. Hope to see you all there.

Know I'm going to kick myself for asking, but is this planned as an all nighter or a camp on Sat night? :). No need for a sleeping system if we're doing it in one shot. Also, not sure if the knees can handle it if it's planned as a trail run. Hats off to the trail runners out there. Thanks
