LM: Three Ridges and The Priest

The Priest is on my hiking bucket list, I missed this trip when Holger did it earlier this year, and I’m hoping to get some nice leaf peeping in this fall. All those pieces add up to one obvious conclusion – it's time to head to Three Ridges for a nice fall weekend.

The plan for is for a[masked] split. We’ll meet at Vienna (the north parking lot) at 5:30 p.m., and then make our way south. We will need to set up a bit of a shuttle before night hiking 2.5 miles to Harpers Creek Shelter. Saturday, we’ll have an early start to give us time to tackle two challenging climbs: the trek up Three Ridges and then up The Priest. Saturday night, we'll camp near The Priest shelter. Sunday is more for scenery as we head to Spy Rock for great views of the area and then head downhill to enjoy Crabtree Falls.

Water sources should be decent along the trail.

While the mileages may be short, the elevation gain is considerable on Saturday (6,200 feet). Friday, we’ll have an elevation gain of 1,000 feet, and then 2,000 feet on Sunday. It’s a good challenge so please consider the elevation when signing up. Afterwards, we'll hit Devils Backbone for food and beer.

This trip also will be a book trip for me as I'll be collecting data on day hike options in this area.

Hey, I remember someone asking about quilts and underquilts while we were out and just found out enlightened equipment is having a sale on all their ready to ship quilts. The only ones on sale are 750 fill down and not quite as light as some other brands, but they are incredibly cheap. Sale is for today only. Here's the link http://www.enlightenedequipment...

Hey folks...I'm taking off on the 4th for a while and won't be able to get out for all of November. If anybody is interested in testing out a hammock setup you're more than welcome to mine for the next couple of weeks. (850)[masked]

I have to say a BIG THANK YOU to your guys and specially Jen and Lora. Jen and Lora team up helping me. One is with me during a hike and another is a plan maker. Again, If I don't buy a new light TENT, I will not come back to your guys.

Once again, and entirely DC UL new-to-me group that was an absolute pleasure to hike with. Lovely views, lovely weather, and the post-hike refuel was top notch. I spent most of the work day looking at everyone's rather excellent photos.

LOL, every time I had my bag packed the forecast dropped a degree or two. hehe...may be a better test for my cold weather hammock setup than I had anticipated. I'll be the frozen one hovering over my hot chocolate in the morning. This is going to be awesome! I'll be taking the metro to Vienna (I believe it's a 5:10 ETA). I'll be the guy wondering the parking lot with the silver jacket and blue pack. :) Please feel free to throw something at me if you see me so I can join in with someone :)

Great! We'll see you there. An update on my transportation -- I'm now driving Lora's RAV-4. Still a blue car, although a bigger one, and I still have red hair.

    Slightly better map here: http://files.meetup.com/1502009...

Why it keeps displaying upside down is a mystery. Fortunately printing it out will solve that challenge.

We're getting closer! If you haven't sent it along yet, here's a friendly reminder to message me with your cell phone number. Also, don't forget to pack some warm layers -- and hats and gloves. The weather is shaping up to be nice and brisk for the weekend: http://bit.ly/1a4uXdt

Very interested in taking that last spot--but I'm flying back from Chicago, not landing until 6:30 at DCA. I can have my gear packed and ready to go from there. Might that work?

Tim - Sorry but the timing will be a little off for you to join us. Hope you can join us on another trip!

I would like to add a plus one to my RSVP.

Hi Monica. Is your plus one a member of DC UL? I just sent you an email requesting your gear list. When you reply, just let me know the details about your guest and we can talk it over. Thanks.

Whoo hoo. So far it's looking like it might be dry AND the temps are finally looking like winter is around the corner. Love me a crisp morning. :)

Actually Jen, I did not just "stitch this route together". There is no reference to doing this entire route online before I put it together as a great training hike and backpacking trip for our group (WB). I searched over VA for maximum elevation gain of great beauty/diversity and an easy route so the group would not get lost unless you were really trying or not paying attention, since we do it as a "Full" and "Half" training events as well as a great backpacking trip.

Looking forward to this. Is there any chance of a carpool on this event? Do you have a guess on what time we'll be back Sunday?

No worries. Let's keep it simple: just send it to jen[dot]adach[at]gmail[dot]com.
