LM: Jeremy's Run Loop

OK, same trip, different leader!  Well, mostly the same trip: Saturday, we'll hike in via the Knob Mountain trail, camp near Jeremy's Run, then hike out on the Neighbor Mountain trail Sunday morning.  This would require a 'horseshoe shuttle' with cars, but the distance between the start and end points is short, so it should be pretty easy.  We'll grab lunch on the way home.  Total mileage: ~ 13.

Forecast: http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=38.6570525&lon=-78.22613890000002&site=all&smap=1&searchresult=Sperryville%2C%20VA%2022740%2C%20USA#.UnBP9BDW4Vg

N.B.: Saturday night's low-- in a nearby town-- is expected to be 37 degrees.  That means it could easily dip below the freezing mark up in the mountains.  So come prepared with warm-enough gear-- and enough food to keep you warm (but not too much, or you'll never live it down ;-) ).  If you have any questions about what to bring, don't hesitate to ask.

Look forward to seeing everybody out there.

Some photos from the trip. (I haven't yet figured out the photo-posting bit on meetup.) Thanks for a wonderful trip, all! https://plus.google.com/photos/113327682057925931969/albums/5942592077485201889?authkey=CJLD1aTdxPzqEw

And the bear scat was also star-worthy!

Ditto! That's great. Thanks for putting them up!

    • Jen

Great photos! I'm glad everyone had a good time on the trip, and look forward to seeing everyone on the trails soon.

  • Misun

The bear sighting alone warrants giving this a 5, but the views were amazing too!

Good fun with good company. I truly enjoyed spending the weekend out with this good-humored crew of backpackers. Thanks for making the time fly. As for Shenandoah, it did not disappoint. Day 2 especially was gorgeous: blue skies, sunshine, fall colors, and impressive vistas. Nothing quite like autumn in the Blue Ridge. Sorry you couldn't be there with us, Jen-- this trip was for you!

    • Cesar

Agree. Good company (including the bear and grouse sighting, as well as the deer that visited our campsite Saturday night), good hike both days and nice weather. My thanks to Dan for stepping up and leading the group. Good job. Thumbs up.

Yo, Heavy D, by my count, you have at least Kevin's, Misun's, and Maile's cars. That should suffice.

    November 1, 2013

    • Daniel

That's fine, Maile, it looks like there'll be two other cars in play. We'll stick the dog in another, driver permitting.

      November 1, 2013

    • Kevin B.

Fine with me...he can ride with me.

      November 1, 2013

  • Michael M.

So, who has a car they can drive to this trip?

    October 29, 2013

    • Kevin B.

I can drive and would have room for 3 additional people. I have a Ford Focus so the back seat might be cramped for taller people. The trunk should work for 4 packs, but might be a little tight. I have a season park pass as well.

      November 1, 2013

    • Daniel

Sounds good, Kevin. Thanks a lot.

      November 1, 2013

  • Daniel

OK, so, if we can use Kevin's, Misun's, and Maile's cars, that should cover us (plus one pooch). Thanks in advance, guys. See you tomorrow morning. Oh, and if you haven't yet, please shoot me your cell #, in a private message.

Argh! I have to drop off this trip. I just got back from a three week "backpacking" trip to Peru and, upon reflection, should probably just have some down time this weekend. Have fun!

    November 1, 2013

    • Daniel

Sorry to miss you on this one, Steve. Sounds like you had an adventure. You'll have to tell us about it some time. Hope to see you out again soon.

      November 1, 2013

  • Brett

    Hey all,

Unfortunately, I am going to have to drop out; I am still playing catch-up from our Congressionally-sponsored vacation, and in the past day or so have had some serious family issues come up I need to address.

So my spot is open. Hopefully I'll be back out on the trail soon, if not before the snow falls, then ASAP in 2014. Good luck, & good hiking, Brett

    October 30, 2013

    • Brett

Yeah, I was hoping to get back out there; a sprained foot has basically kept me on the sidelines the entire spring & summer, and my new GoLite Jam has been mocking me from closet shelf for months now. Again, hope you guys have a great time!

      November 1, 2013

    • Daniel

Thanks, Brett. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Just a quick and gentle reminder, that if you're a member, you need to pay your dues for this trip, if you haven't yet. (Cesar!) ;)

    November 1, 2013

    • Cesar

Got it. Thanks for the reminder.

      November 1, 2013

  • Maile

Sorry for the late reply; if we still need more transportation, I've got a coupe that would seat 3 others if they're not too tall. But I'm not the best of drivers or at directions so would prefer to not drive if others are able. Denise, I've also got a 2-person Kelty tent that I'm happy to share if you don't mind doubling up. Just let me know.

    November 1, 2013

    • Michael M.

Thanks, Maile ... Dan is trying to sort out the car logistics. We may be a little car challenged for this one.

How, exactly, does one avoid exposed, ungrounded backcountry areas during a lightning storm?

    1 · October 30, 2013

    • Denise M.

Lol Douglas! Nothing better than old fashioned common sense instead of coffee as a wake up call. What in the backcountry is considered grounded?? I appreciate that you responded to my question. The safety guideline also mentioned avoiding ridgelines, lone trees and shallow caves. Lightening delivers 300 million volts per bolt, there are 225+ lightening strike victims each year (I wonder how many are outdoor adventure related), 10% are fatalities. Taken from Backpacker Mag.

  • Cesar

I'm also car-less. I can meet at Vienna Metro.

    October 30, 2013

  • Jen

Hope everyone had a good weekend! I'm just back from Three Ridges but wanted to give a quick check-in about Jeremy's Run. I'll send out tomorrow a more detailed email about the weekend tomorrow, but please update your RSVP if you can no longer attend so I can accommodate the wait list. Thanks!

    October 27, 2013

    • Michael M.

Denise, I imagine we can find a way to get a shelter to you. I will be at Vienna at about 8-8:30am for a CHC hike. Perhaps someone could share?

      October 30, 2013

    • Denise M.

I'm not too pressed. I was so hoping this money would come in before going out again, it's just hanging for the moment and I can't use it until they hand it over. Ugh. I don't mind sleeping under the big empty. It's nice if it's not snowing or raining. And all spiders have taken their leave...Haha!

      October 30, 2013

  • Kevin B.

Just in case my RSVP update didn't work, I'm still attending. Thanks.

    October 29, 2013

    • Kevin B.

Just sent Dan my gear list.

      October 30, 2013

    • Michael M.

      Great!

      October 30, 2013

  • Denise M.

Ok, did I make this one by accident?? I want to go...can Aris come or no? Yeah, I know he was a pain at the end of the last trip, but he'd learning, has a jacket and all, I still have no shelter, which will very shortly be handled (I hope). :)

    October 29, 2013

  • Cesar

Hi Dan, do you have a link for the weather forecast?

    October 29, 2013

  • Misun

Still in :) I have a car and would be willing to drive. Use me as a last resort though 'cause I'm not the greatest at directions or following people.

    October 29, 2013

  • Maile

If there's space on the trip, I'd love to join. No problem if not though.

    October 29, 2013

    • Michael M.

Maile, I moved you in. Let Dan have a gear list when you get a chance.

      October 29, 2013

    • Maile

Will do -- thanks so much!

      October 29, 2013

    Updating, yes. In.

People on the waitlist, please reply here if you are interested in this trip. Heavy D is getting up-to-speed, and we'll have some spots available in a few.

Thank, Cesar. I got your message, and I'm trying to figure out what is going on with my mail settings. Thanks for pointing it out.

I hiked Knob Mountain trail in March. Not a lot of views, but very pleasant. It is a horse trail, and might be nearer to easy access than Neighbor Mtn, so you may have to watch your step :)

    October 7, 2013

    • Jen

Yay! Horse trail! I'm still debating the merits of Knob Mountain versus Neighbor Mountain. Originally, I was trying to stitch a route that had us do both so I could compare, but it wasn't coming together easily -- at least without setting up a shuttle or doing Jeremy's Run twice.

      October 8, 2013

  • Misun

Now that I know what "stream crossing" means, I'll be ready this time ;)

    October 7, 2013

    • Jen

Don't worry! These should be easier stream crossings than the ones we had in Otter Creek.

      October 7, 2013

    • Jen

Oh -- Misun, let me know what you need in the way of gear for the weekend.

      October 8, 2013

  • Jen

And welcome to Miles! We have a great crew -- all we need is the park to re-open in time for the trip.

    October 8, 2013

  • Denise M.

I would love to come out on this!! Need to make sure I can get off work, not sure. I'm trying to sign up before they fill! ;)

    October 7, 2013

  • Jen

    Welcome Misun, Cesar, and Steve!

Knob Mtn / Jeremy's Run Loop (May 2011) kicked my butt. It was my first hike ever in East Coast heat. Barely finished it due to heat exhaustion. The next week went back and did Knob / Neighbor Loop with different clothes and practicing a few "staying cool" techniques. Wish I could join you on this one.
