MO W1: Old Logger’s Path is Now MD AT!

UPDATE - 2/20/14 - The Old Logger’s Path is considered to be one of the most popular backpacking routes in Pennsylvania…. but it is buried under snow (as apparently much of PA is) so we're not  going there!

PLAN B is in full effect. We're now heading to do the full length of the AT in Maryland. This does boost the overall mileage of the trip to ~41 miles for the weekend, but the AT miles are relatively mild.

We're sticking with the 8 a.m. meeting time tomorrow (Friday) at Grosvenor. We'll head up to Pen Mar and collect Ben, who will be leaving a big red van at the end point. We'll then head to Harper's Ferry and leave the remaining cars at the National Visitors Center parking lot. Friday, we're aiming for the Rocky Run shelter, about 15 miles for the day. (If we need to stop earlier, there's the Crampton Gap shelter at mile 10…. but that would make Saturday a longer day. Talk amongst yourselves.)

Saturday, we'll leave Rocky Run and keep heading north for about 16 miles to the Cowall Gap shelter, maybe taking a little break along the way to enjoy the views from Annapolis Rocks. Sunday, we'll wrap up the remaining nine miles to Pen Mar, pile in Ben's van, and find food somewhere along the route. (Also, since Ben is bringing his van to help facilitate the shuttle, please plan to bring some extra gas money to contribute to the cause. Thanks.)

Maps! If you have the PATC Maps 5 and 6 (that's one map), you're set. If not, then try printing the map from this page

Weather-wise, we're looking at slightly warmer temperatures, with highs in the 50s during the day but still dipping down to the 20s at night. There is a chance of rain on Friday. Bring your layers. Also, reports from the parks along the way say that there is still some snow on the trail, but it is melting quickly.

These temps can be quite dangerous to hike in, please take necessary precautions to stay dry, and warm.  Precipitation when in the 30's, 40's, and even 50's is and ugly combo.  Sub freezing would be safer!  Anyone with limited backpacking experience in this season please reach out to me or Jen.

For the dates we will be there the sun will be up by 7am and setting around 5:50pm.  On Sunday, we're planning on us breaking camp no later than 7:30 (earlier is fine by me).  We should be able to make it back to cars by noon.

Questions? Concerns? General musings about life? Post below. Otherwise, we'll see you tomorrow.

Ben's trip sounded awesome. I wish I was on it, too! (But great to meet you, Hans! Hope to see you again soon.)

I had so much fun this weekend!!! Jen, stoked to have hiked with you again, and that we were able to get something scratched together last minute.

I hear that Rocky Run features a newly built shelter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rocky_Run_Shelter). Ravens Rock is new too, though Cowall is nice, as well.

Saw this on AT website; Crampton Gap Shelter - Closed
Due to recent fire damage, the shelter has been closed until further notice. (December 30, 2013)

I swapped out some clothing, sleeping bag, and sleeping pad.

Gear fans! Since the weather will be slightly warmer, I'm going to bring along my new Sawyer mini-filter to test out. (Yes, I know I'll still have to sleep with it if temps dip into the 20s at night.)

And the theme of the year is PLAN B! You should have received this over email but note that we need to change locations for the weekend: http://www.meetup.com/DC-UL-Backpacking/messages/boards/thread/42047592/

And I should specify that we are sticking with the same overall timeframe -- so off on Friday morning and back on Sunday.

    Here is a link to a Sheetz in Selinsgrove, PA. I'd like to meet up with you here;

Plus its a good spot to stretch, refuel, and play with MTO screens;)
Cell phone service in the OLP area is spotty at best. !!ADDITIONALLY!!
The forecast was calling for higher temps, and rain, which the OLP area DID NOT receive. We will more than likely be walking on snow. I know this changes things for some, but we can manage.

Sounds good, I could probably arrange for a car if all fails, but it would be awkward, and 3 and 4 seems fine especially since we are packing light. No need to waste fuel. Plus, aren't we only 6 people leaving DC if Ben joins us later?

      February 18, 2014

    • Jen

Hans is better at math than me. Yes... we're just six from D.C.!

    Ben,
I emailed you. Is it possible it's in your junk mail?

Here's a rough cut of my gear list for our trip based on the following weather- http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/getForecast?query=zmw:17763.1.99999
AND the fact that we're not busting out big(or even medium days:))
    Gear List- http://www.geargrams.com/list?id=17445

Don't get to hung up on weight on this trip, as it will be LM, and we will have more time to tally-whack around camp. That being said, if Brian wants to use a skid of tea lamp candles to cook his food for 6-7 hours, than by all means:)
We shouldnt have much snow up there by the time we get there Friday. HOWEVER, I will still pack optional footwear in the trunk of my car. Some Streams could require wading, be prepared! Please contact Jen, or myself with questions prior to departure.

So I am a little confused, how are there people on the waiting list but I was able to just sign up? Not that I am complaining :-)
With the fresh snow, what are the chances of needing snowshoes for the trip?

    February 14, 2014

    • Hans

Ah, and I also overlooked the MO in the title. Will be in touch with the organizer about that.

I also probably need to back out of this, unless anyone wants to leave later on Friday & play catch up with the group. Joffrey was going to be my driving & late night hiking partner since I can't leave until after work on Friday. He has to move instead, and I don't feel super pumped to drive and hike alone.

    February 11, 2014

  • Reid

Just found out I had a previous commitment so I have to back out. I know I made someone on the wait list happy.

Jen/Ben, there is the potential that I will be backing out of this trip. It sounds sweet but I have some other things going on in my life and I'm feeling a little spread thin. I'm gonna keep my RSVP as a yes for now but feel free to message me if you need an answer.

One of my e-mails to Jen went to her spam folder. My real e-mail is below if you want to reach me. Thanks much!

On this note, I almost certainly also have to pull out of this so I can move this weekend. I'll figure it out in the next couple of days.

Sorry for lack of details regarding our loop. I WILL have this info up in a few days,...promise.
Joffrey, you'll have NO probs catching up saturday morn. The portion we will start with has very little elevation change, relative to second have of hike.

I think I'd have to leave town Friday night, but could catch up, I'm sure.

I'd be arriving with this guy. I can't leave the school day early, sadly, but this hike sounds great.
