MO: Section 3: Tuscarora Trail, Waites Run Road to Gore, VA (37 miles)

Section 3 of the TT.

We'll start out Friday night and do splits of 4ish-20ish-12ish.

From Waites Run Road, we have a climb back to the ridgeline, then a long, high dry section to Capon Springs Road ... about 16 miles, during which we'll cross WV-55 (I've always wanted to hike past that sign!) and leave Map F behind.  Friday night, we'll stay around the Gerhard Shelter.

From Capon Springs Road, there is 7.2 miles through a more settled area, but the trail is supposed to be on forest lanes, rather than roads.  The following 13.6 miles is in the Devils Backbone backcountry.  It's supposed to be good hiking, and fairly rarely visited by us or the DC groups.

We'd end at Gore, VA.

The maps are PATC F and L.  DC ULers should have maps.

As always, I will take ten.  As always, I need folks with cars for these section hikes.  As always, I will fill in the details as we get closer.

Obviously, I made the mistake of remarking how smoothly the TT sections had gone Saturday night, and Sunday morning Fate punished us with a string of mishaps. A fairly serious sprain requiring ATV evacuation, a broken radiator on Eeyore car, a hiker astray, a misplaced wallet .... You know the drill. Still, it was a great trip with the best backpacking companions a fellow could ask for. Everybody stayed calm and shot down one problem after the other, we made it to Gore, VA, and soon we were enjoying pints at the Union Jack in Winchester, VA. Thanks everyone for the *sang froid* and hanging together. I'll do a full trip report this afternoon (after I do some real writing for work)! That about 100 miles down of the TT's 250!

Simply amazing weekend. Here is the trail snapshot of what we covered :- http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/display/20140303054600-02142-map.html. For best viewing results, switch to google terrain view using the drop-down on the top right.

Wish I had a GPS so we could have tracked the ATV, foot, and pickup travel at the end.

Big congratulations to Michael for organization and keeping it all together, thanks to the Hua-lking Fire for camp warmth and spirit-yells, to John for keeping me company, to Stephanie for lending me her raincoat and to everyone else for their congeniality.

I think this may have been one of my favorite DC UL hikes ever. Bring on the hiccups, we can handle it- and still make it to the pub for drinks afterwards!

Thanks again to everyone for a great trip. My hiking poles are in the mail ;)

WOW!!! What a exciting eventful backpack experience: Survived a harsh cold windy night at a wind catching shelter for the firs night; hiker went wrong trail magically found way back; wallet with a passport inside lost on the trail got lucky back; Last day leg stretching was chased by the cold rain on our tails; "New” shuttle car needed to be towed away; hiker with sprained ankle was rescued by..... O, What else could go wrong..?? Thanks to Martin, a great organizer, everyone got out safe and sound, except the sprained ankle still hurting. I enjoyed so much the wilderness nature, and the hart rising extra... Nice to hike with everyone. Hope to ya all on the trail soon.

No one will ever be able to corroborate this, but the guy who towed me might be nearing 'Big Al' levels of notoriety. From failed business ventures to baby deliveries and use of excessive force as a police officer, I don't think I said more than 10 words over the entire 90 minute drive. I also think he wanted a tip, but I had run out of charity after seeing the bill.

My driver side door is broken and I'd rather not drive with that Will we still be ok with cars if I don't drive?

I'll reply to this in my upcoming e-mail.

I really can't be certain about if I'll make it or not...I'm going to cancel for now, but I will be in touch tomorrow afternoon if I can swing it. I really want to go hiking!

@JD, John ... Let's plan to meet at the parking lot of Applebee's in Winchester ... As indicated by point B here (http://goo.gl/maps/VjIUT). From there, we'll caravan to the northern trailhead near Gore, VA.

@ Mimi, Karan ... MikeVW may need to back out, so one of you would be on the spot to drive from Vienna.

@ John ... The 16-mile stretch we're starting with is largely dry. There should be water towards the last few miles of this stretch, maybe mile 13. The book references a few intermittent streams along the route, including one 0.5 miles from the Gerhard Shelter. I know I'm not going to go looking for it at 10pm. So, I'd consider it dry, and carry enough water for Friday night through Saturday morning.

    February 25, 2014

    • Michael M.

That would be perfect. There was parking right there where the blue blazes reach the road, if I remember correctly.

    Weather looks good ... http://www.weather.com/weather/tenday/Wardensville+WV+USWV0781:1:US

The snow depth was near nothing prior to this storm ... http://www.nohrsc.noaa.gov/interactive/html/graph.html?units=0&ey=2014&em=2&ed=28&eh=6&station=WRDW2 ...

I'm hoping we can avoid the spring-time slush.

All right, so my boss is testifying in front of Congress next week, which always occasions a lot of excitement. If I seem distant, that's the reason.

So, if John and JD could meet me to establish the northern end of the shuttle, and MikeVW and Mimi could meet Stephanie, Upasana, Karan at Vienna, we eight could all just meet up at the Waites Run Road trailhead.

    John, you game?

    February 24, 2014

    • John C.

Michael - sounds fine. I plan to meet you in Gore, VA. Can you send me coordinates or a landmark where we are parking? I plan to print directions out since mobile data is sketchy along VA-WV border! Is Friday evening a dry camping location? If so, do you know the approximate distance to the first available water? Thanks.

MM - has DC UL been to the Union Jack in Winchester post hike? Incredible beer selection and good Yelp review.

Not to my knowledge. We will rectify that on this trip.

Unfortunately, I cannot make this trip as I'm being forced to go to Pearl Harbor for work starting that Friday. I know, I know, tough life. ;-)

I'm tentatively interested if a spot opens up; it's the middle of term paper season for me, so it might be a little dependent on grading...

    February 3, 2014

Obviously, a spot will be made for you if you want to come, Eeyore.

The Grey Lady is tot so hopefully sufficient vehicles are available for the shuttle. I will be driving from SE PA - let me know if anyone on the way needs a ride.
