LM: Section 4 of the Tuscarora Trail, Gore, VA to Hampshire Grade Road (23.5 mi)

And our pursuit of section-hiking the Tuscarora Trail goes on!

I'm going to do this as an LM section, with just one night out so that more people can participate, and get a taste for the TT!  Another advantage will be that we will be set to reach Pennsylvania in Section 5, I believe.  This is the week before the Death March / Sufferfest ... so we'll want to take it easy on this relatively gentle section.

We'll meet up at Vienna, 8am, Saturday morning, establish the car shuttle, and start hiking north from Gore, Virginia.  Sunday, we'll conclude in the afternoon at Hampshire Grade Road, reverse the shuttle, visit a pub, and head home.

The relevant map is PATC, Map L.  Buy it!

New people are welcome.  In fact, I encourage applicants to come out for this one: it's a good choice.  I'll take 10, so long as I have the seats in the cars!

This should, I hope, be lovely springtime weather!

For those who are interesting, here is a map view of what we covered over the two days :-

Just for 'fun', I've also shown the route (in red) which we took while driving back to Gore..
To view our track with contours, go to the drop down on the top right and select 'Google Terrain'

Great trip with great people.. Time just flew over the hike - the road walk was fun because of the weather, followed by the fire, the stories and the pics at the campsite and then the refreshing trail the next day. Looking forward to the next Section of Tuscarora..

What a lovely time! This section had a nice variety -- road walking, farm hopping, and nice stretches of trail -- and plenty of time for camera/tripod fun. I'm excited to see all the photos.

Thanks, everyone for the great trip! Fantastic weather on Saturday, good walking on Sunday, and fantastic company all the time! I look forward to hiking with you all again soon. And that's about half of the Tuscarora Trail completed!

Fantastic trip, it was great to meet all of you. Many thanks to everyone who drove, especially Mimi. Let's walk around in the woods (and maybe even a little on the road) again real soon.

You can get GE Silicone II mixed with odorless mineral spirits. You can get both at Lowes or Home Depot along with disposablecfoam brushes. Henry Shires video: http://d22u3mtwtxpk6b...

Please do not wait for me. I am not coming (very bad headache). I am extremely sorry for last minute cancellation. Have a great time. I will see some of you on Thursday for sure (no health issue is going to stop me).

Now that there's a spot, any chance I can join in too? I have all my own gear and am an experienced multiday backpacker (not so much UL, but I'm not too slow!)

    March 21, 2014

    • Michael M.

You bet, Sara! I was just thinking, "Should I e-mail and try to fill out this spot?" It's yours. Here are the details (http://www.meetup.com...) ... Call me if you have questions [masked]). Otherwise, I'll see you at 8am tomorrow, Vienna North Lot.

Sorry for the late cancellation, but immediate work travel came upon me, and unfortunately I will no longer be able to do this. Enjoy the weather there!

I don't know how to feel as I am not done with the cold and the snow but I love the warmth too. Anyways 60s is lighter load maybe :)

I know a few of you are photographers.

Since this is a short trip, I'd like to set up a shoot for Saturday night. We'll try to get some good "glowing tent" photos (https://www.google.com/search?q=glowing+tent&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=qtMpU5l5xMLLAeqsgZAG&sqi=2&ved=0CEwQsAQ&biw=1676&bih=775).

That will involve a long exposure and firing off a speedlight in the tents. I'll carry in my tripod for people to use, as well as a cheap speedlight, which should do the trick. If the sky is clear, we can also try for some astro-photography.

    So bring your real cameras!

If you're tempted to do this, and you're wondering, "Can my point-and-shoot handle this sort of thing?" get out your owner's manual and see if you can manually set your shutter speed to something very long (even several minutes). Also, make sure you can adjust your ISO.

      March 20, 2014

    • Mignote

I will plan on packing my tripod if not too heavy.

I am honestly tempted to go Friday night and spending the night in the beautiful camp site and shelter by the connector near Gore. Haven't decided yet. But It sounds like a good idea to barbecue and chill out there for a change.

    March 12, 2014

    • Jen

Thanks for the offer but I think Michael needs my car for the shuttle. I'm even getting an oil change for the occasion!

      March 20, 2014

That would be lovely, Mimi! Let me know what time to expect you :)

So from the guy who was recently complaining about people backing out on short notice... Will have to, sorry. My girlfriend just let me know about this baby shower thing happening on Sunday, and it sounds like a social obligation I can't skip. Trust me, I would much rather be on the trail with you! And I already bought delicious chicken a la king!
Have a great hike, hope to see some of you at the death march. No babies stopping me from that one.

    March 19, 2014

    • Michael M.

Will miss you, Hans! You may be the first person to back out for a baby shower! ;). I look forward to meeting you next week on the Death March.

Saturday morning I can reach Vienna metro by around 8:15am even if I board the the first train. This is because metro starts late on week end. Will that be ok?

    March 17, 2014

  • Michael M.

With the current number of cars, I'm going to let the group number rise a little, so everyone can go. We'll roll the dice some, live dangerously.

    March 11, 2014

  • Michael M.

If you're on the waiting list, could you indicate if you could bring a car?

    March 10, 2014

    • Michael M.

Oh yes, that works just as well.

      March 10, 2014

    • Matt S.

I'm not on the wait list but I am happy to rent a car and drive folks; I get a nice corporate discount with Enterprise.
