MO: Back to Massanutten - South Loop 38ish miles.

Covergirl, Heavy D and I have been itching to see the rest of this loop after bowing out of the Sufferfest.  So here is the loose plan:

We'll depart from Vienna Metro North lot at 5pm Friday night, and drive this route to the Massanutten Visitor Center parking lot on Route 211.  We'll take the Wildflower Trail from there south until it links up with the Massanutten South Trail, where we'll hang a right and start our CCW loop.  A couple miles of climbing should bring us to a cliff top campsite where we can hopefully squeeze everyone in.  This site is dry so don't forgot to bring plenty of water!

Saturday morning we'll follow the Orange blazes south, past Boone shelter, and then turn back north on Cub Run Road.  We'll find a nice campsite somewhere here, maybe hiking a total of 20 miles, though we can play that by ear.  Water should be plentiful all day.

Sunday we'll continue north and finish up the 15 or so remaining miles - picking up the Massanutten South trail again, then following the Browns Hollow trail back to our cars.  We'll grab some lunch on the way home.

You'll need either PATC Map H or the Nat Geo Trails Illustrated #792.

We have BA, GQ and myself (Savage) driving.  That should be plenty.

Be prepared to embrace the mud!

    OK, Breaking down:
Day one: 0.97 miles in 0:31:18hrs; up 894 ft, down 34ft
Day two: 27.83 miles in 9:13:19 hrs; up 4918 ft, down 6544 ft.
Day three: 8.55 miles in 3:17:11 hrs; up 2705 ft, down 2008 ft.
My Sports GPS tracking system count each up and doen steps, and other GPS might just count trail as a straight line, and do not count the smaller up and down.

Yeah, it's strange - but probably just due to behind the scenes 'smoothing' I guess. Stats for Saturday when I uploaded it alone: 28 miles, moving average 3mph. Elevation: 4227ft ascent and 5083ft descent.

Everything fell into place for this one: the weather, the people, the beautiful spring mountains and forest. Really pleasant and a good workout to boot. The company was fun and upbeat as usual. The miles flew by talking to you guys about anything and everything. I've got that old weekend-well-spent feeling again. Thanks to everyone and special thanks to Will and Alison for making this Massanutten comeback happen. Revenge of the Sufferfest Drop-outs!

Hate to see the hike came to the end, and had to say "Good bye" to everyone. Enjoyed every bit of the moment of the hike: the dark, rainy, and windy Friday night; the sunny, hot, and “flat” hiking Saturday, and the relaxing hiking with all the “Speedy Gonzales” on Sunday. The most impressive moments of the hike were Jimmy step into the bone cold water just marching through the water streams, so as Will and Karan; and Will squeezing his car through the road blocking gat with the cop’s car sit on the other end of the road to get to the Uncle Buck's. An unforgettable backpack fun experience!!!

Some things with work need to be completed earlier than anticipated and I may have to work this weekend unfortunately. As much as I want to do this, I'll have to back out and assume I can't make it for now. Will, just in case I do free up later and can do this, would it be alright if I send you a message directly to see if I can rejoin? (assuming there are enough spots of course!)

    April 23, 2014

    • Will

Definitely! Just give me a shout, it's no problem.

      April 23, 2014

  • Michael M.

You guys have a nice group for this, already. I know the south fairly well now, so I'll bring map H this weekend, and we can discuss the route. I actually tend to think you should do a figure eight that hits Morgan Hollow, as we found that very attractive when we turned north.

    April 3, 2014

    • Michael M.

I'll have to glance at my map at home. Perhaps I have the name wrong.

      April 22, 2014

    • Will

No worries - just contemplating your figure 8 idea now, might allow for a nice long Saturday and avoid road camping. Not that I care at this point, it's time to hit the trail!

It's good to have multiple maps, spread amongst several people. You almost always have more data that way.

What kind of milage are we thinking per day? I don't think I could do a 2014 Sufferfest 2.0 but Moderationfest sounds promising :)
