Triple Crown, VA, Autumn Foliage: 35-miler

Holger and I are teaming up to do this trip on the last weekend in October. Hopefully, that will be a nice weekend for seeing some fall color.

On Friday, 10/26, we'll drive down from DC towards Roanoke--about a 4 and 1/2 hour drive. We'll park and walk the short bit into the nearby shelter (do bring a headlamp and be prepared to walk after sundown).

Saturday, we wake quite early, strike camp, and get to McAfee Knob by dawn for great pictures and a cup of coffee. Once we've gotten enough of the view, we'll start walking, passing Tinker Mountain and then walking south along the North Mountain Trail. That night, we'll pitch our shelters along the ridge. This will be a dry camp, so we'll need to carry plenty of water (about 3L).

Sunday, we'll rise early again, visit Dragon's Tooth. Then, it's back to the car, lunch, and the drive home. I'll firm up the splits as we get closer to the dates. Some of the details (such as carpooling) will be flexible based on who signs up.

It should be a challenging trip, but a rewarding one, too. Sign up now to reserve the spot. I'll confirm you, and then check in as the date approaches. The group size is limited to eight people!

Here, essentially, is how we plan to walk the trail:

A great introduction to the group and to my first 20 mile day! The trail was challenging, but the views were outstanding -- even with the cloud cover. Thanks to everyone for being so welcoming to the newbie. Can't wait for the next one.

Great group of hikers and a great loop. Too bad we didn't get the views on McAfee and Tinker, but that's Mother Nature for you... It just made the view from Dragon's Tooth even better!

    Another fantastic trip!

Thanks for such a great trip, everyone! Trip report coming in a few!

I'm really bummed I can't go. My wife's going out-of-town and I need to watch the dogs (I think 35 miles is too much for them). Hopefully I'll get a chance to backpack w/ Ryan again before he begins his great adventure...

    • Ryan

      You better!

I understand about the dogs. Much of my free time is consumed by dealing with elderly dogs. It's either me or Laura.

Last weather update. Looking downright balmy:

Guys, with Holger unable to go, we're going to try to take just one car--mine--and get four people and their stuff into it. If that's impossible, Jen's car will be at Vienna, so we can take it too. MM

    October 25

  • Michael Martin

Think we're good to go, 6pm at the Vienna Kiss and Ride. My car and Jen's can seat six total with gear. Still waiting to hear if Katherine is joining us. MM

    October 23

  • Michael Martin

Any chance people could meet at Vienna's Kiss and Ride by 5pm? If not, we can stick to 6pm.

    October 22

    • Ryan

I think 5pm is too early for me... I'll still need to ditch out of work early to make it by 6pm.

      October 22

    • Michael Martin

      We'll stick to 6pm, then.

I did a quick trip to Big Schloss this past weekend and the leaves were looking pretty nice. I've never seen Wolf Gap so crowded! You guys should have a pretty good time.

I think some of the hunting seasons are about to start up, so you guys may want to check the seasons and bring orange if appropriate...

leaves aren't peaking yet in that area so we might be lucky and get there with gorgeous colors once again.

Yeah, they're not peak yet in the Massanutten or even at Otter Creek. We may have timed it about right.

    Yay, Sharon!

@Joffrey ... I'm sorry you can't join us! I may try to do one more little trip the weekend of 11/10. After that, I'm off to Nepal for the last part of November. Of course, when I get back, it'll be time for some winter backpacking!

I'd like to go, but have a friend I seldom see coming into town that weekend. The weather is starting to look good for being out on the trails though! Now all we need is some snow...

Luz, John, glad you're joining the trip!

I love this trip. If not for the Marine Corps Marathon, I would definitely revisit this! Michael, have you found any other maps of the area besides the ones Evan had? Thinking I may hit it in the spring once racing season is over.

Yeah, I'm running, and training has eaten into my other pursuits pretty heavily. You could probably offer your bib up on the 'I Run, You Run' meetup group, maybe even get your money back for it!

      September 24

    • Michael Martin

You ought to be mercifully near your taper ... Marathon training can be all-consuming. I'll do exactly what you suggest with the bib number ... I hate the idea that I might be preventing someone from running.
