This is a bit more of a mark-your-calendar type thing.
We'll take advantage of the 3-day weekend for MLK day and head out to do this horseshoe shuttle. We'll start at Annapolis Rocks just north of I-70 and walk north along the AT to Raven Rock Road. Then, we'll swing east and walk on roads for a few miles till we hook up with the Catoctin Mountain Trail. From there, we'll walk south till we reach the shuttle vehicle, which we'll have parked near the Frederick Municipal Forest and I-70. By walking this route, we'll hit some nice highlights of the AT as well as some lovely spots in the Mt. Catoctin area. Our total mileage should come to about 41--we'll be spending both Saturday and Sunday nights out. I'll figure out the campsites as the date approaches.
Hiking these miles in the winter will be challenging, though the ground would be moderate. You'll need to have good winter gear and be prepared for snow and ice. We may have to change plans if there's too much snow on the ground.
Please express interest. I'll screen you, if we haven't hiked together before, and confirm you for the trip.
I'll fill in the details as the date approaches.
So sad I missed this trip! Especially after reading the write up! Way to go Carrie! ;)

Our 40-ish miler ended up being a 50-miler, but we knocked it out, 16-20-14, and we all got around. Trip report and pictures coming up.

Can you provide driving directions once you work it all out or at least the routes so I can MapQuest them! I'd like to have a set in my car. Are you sure we need 3 Vehicles? I can fit quite a bit in my Jeep/RAV (5 if it's for a short shuttle).

Hmmm ... With a little bit of futher research, I have found the following option ... http://www.reserveamerica.com/c...
... I'll have to tinker with the routing some, but it would be nice to have that fire pit, huh? I'm going to reserve one of these!

Just to clarify on this thing, the three maps you should considering bringing along are: (1) the PATC's map 5 & 6; (2) the Catoctin Trail from Hiking Upward (http://www.hikingupward.com/OMH...
); and (3) this map from the NPS (http://www.nps.gov/cato/planyou...
). My thought is that we'd detour by Chimney Rock, Wolf Rock and the vistas before rejoining the main Catoctin Trail at Cunningham Falls. That way, we won't miss anything. ;)

How does this look for the post-hike meal?
You can see where my priorities are.

Hey guys, if you have the PATC Map 5, this is what I am proposing. We'll park the ending point car at Turner's Gap, and then start the trail from Gambrill State Park, walking north on the Catoctin Trail. On Saturday, we'll walk about 16 miles to the Manor Area Campground. It will be closed. We may have to be, uh, creative about camping that night. Plainly, no one in Maryland has thought much about winter backpacking (Owens Creek opens in May!).
Sunday, we'd reach Ravens Rock, and head south on the AT to Annapolis Rocks, where there is a nice campsite. Monday morning, we'd complete the journey to Turners Gap and be home early. The weather seems like it will support such a plan:

I note that there's no accumulation planned for the stuff that's likely to slow us down.
Too crazy? Splits would look like 16-21-7.5, for a total of 44.5 miles for the weekend. Not bad for January.
January 9
Welcome, Carrie and Doug! Was out there on Saturday, and there was some snow and ice, but it wasn't too bad.
January 7
While I am not sure I share Jen's enthusiasm for hiking in snow, I think I'd like to give this weekend a go. It'll be good to get out again.
January 6
I need to start throwing in more back-to-back 20mi days, so I might be up for this.
