Just to clarify on this thing, the three maps you should considering bringing along are: (1) the PATC's map 5 & 6; (2) the Catoctin Trail from Hiking Upward (http://www.hikingupward.com/OMH...); and (3) this map from the NPS (http://www.nps.gov/cato/planyou...). My thought is that we'd detour by Chimney Rock, Wolf Rock and the vistas before rejoining the main Catoctin Trail at Cunningham Falls. That way, we won't miss anything. ;)

Hey guys, if you have the PATC Map 5, this is what I am proposing. We'll park the ending point car at Turner's Gap, and then start the trail from Gambrill State Park, walking north on the Catoctin Trail. On Saturday, we'll walk about 16 miles to the Manor Area Campground. It will be closed. We may have to be, uh, creative about camping that night. Plainly, no one in Maryland has thought much about winter backpacking (Owens Creek opens in May!).
Sunday, we'd reach Ravens Rock, and head south on the AT to Annapolis Rocks, where there is a nice campsite. Monday morning, we'd complete the journey to Turners Gap and be home early. The weather seems like it will support such a plan:
I note that there's no accumulation planned for the stuff that's likely to slow us down.
Too crazy? Splits would look like 16-21-7.5, for a total of 44.5 miles for the weekend. Not bad for January.
