LM: Maryland AT into Harpers Ferry (good for people new to our group!)

***This is updated trail description with much more in the way of detail about what we'll be doing.***

We'll all meet up at Grosvenor Metro Station, Saturday morning, 2/23, at 8am, and we'll promptly be on our way, driving a route like this one to Harpers Ferry.  Should only take us about an hour, and we'll establish the car shuttle at the base of Maryland Heights.

Then, we'll head north to where the AT crosses I-70,and park the other cars there.  If all goes well (and, really, how else could it go?!), we should be set to start hiking south along the AT by about 10am.

I've provided fairly detailed maps (Map1, Map2, Map3, and Map4) that detail the route we're going to cover.  Essentially, on Saturday, we'll walk south on the AT about 15 miles or so to the Ed Garvey Shelter, where we'll pitch our shelters and enjoy a campfire together.  Then Sunday morning, we'll wake early, head to Weverton Cliffs for the big views there, then descend to Harpers Ferry.

We'll add on the extra views at Maryland Heights, and get in one last climb, for fun.  Somehow, I've never done that walk.

I estimate that our splits will be about 15-10.  Once we're done Sunday morning, we'll reverse the shuttle, drive into Frederick for pub grub and a celebratory pint, then head home.

I'll continue to update this description as the date gets a little closer.

Obviously, this would be a great trip for someone new to the group.

Express interest and we'll go from there. Trip size is limited to eight.

Please feel free to ask any questions.  MM

Trip report is up in the forums. Still working on pictures and Google Earth. Life is busy.

Turned out well. Weather.com "30% showers" forecast for Boonsboro trounced Accuweather's "80% rain" prediction. "30% chance of showers" generally means little or none, which is what we had: little or none. There was some drizzle driving out, then no rain but heavy fog on the trail Saturday morning (plus some ice melting off the branches for a brief time). Sunday was lovely. Temps probably in the 30-40 deg range both days (I didn't carry a thermometer). Dog did really well.

We completed our planned trip ... about 26 miles from I-70 into Harpers Ferry, with a few extra miles in Maryland Heights. Great group, reasonable weather, fun times. Pictures and trip report forthcoming!

Yeah, I really misjudged conditions and missed out on a decent backpacking weekend. I was most concerned with getting to the trailhead in freezing rain, but hopefully I can drum up support for a second attempt this Saturday!

    • Michael Martin

Well, the weather reports bore no relation to reality. We were expecting an 80% chance of rain all day Saturday--we had a little drizzle in the morning, then nothing. Monday was very nice, perhaps a little windy, but a good walking day.

Great trip, great people, and great beer at the end! Safe to say, one of the best 25+ mile backpacking trips i've done in a while!

Great intro trip, fun group of people. The weather was much better than expected and the descent into Harpers Ferry was spectacular - looking forward to more trips with DC UL!

Michael, what is the condition of the spring source near the Ed Garvey shelter? I hear its a .5 mile walk down a steep hill.

    February 22

    • Michael Martin

Yep, there's a spring. It is down a hill, but it's not that bad. Last time I slept there, Laura and I chilled a bottle of wine in it. ;) might want to have enough capacity to only make the trip once.

I would like to attendo but one of my kids is sick. I'll have to wait for the evening to decide!

We'd love for you to come. Just let me know tonight if I should expect you.

With five and three cars, we should be okay. We might have to spend a few extra minutes shuttling at the end. My car can seat four with gear, barely, but five has never been attempted.

There may be hope yet. Boonsboro forecast now saying only 30% chance of showers on Saturday. (as of 5:37p Thurs)

Good! You know, if you just stick the dog in the sleeping bag with you, both will be toasty. Don't know if she'll fit.

She is a German Shorthaired Pointer, so she does not have much built-in protection to count on. I planned for her to be in the tent with me, but not in my mummy bag; I have a foam pad for her and a fleece blanket; also I have an insulated coat for her to sleep in. During the hike itself she would be wearing a Neoprene vest and maybe a fleece sweater (used those two in the snow on Signal Knob last weekend); in the rain I would add her raincoat but would not count on the other layers staying dry enough to sleep in. I did not know there were dog sleeping bags -- my fault for not looking for something like that.
[I have not figured out how to post a reply directly to an existing thread. I type into the "write a reply" space but then there is no "post" or "send" method that I have found, although I am sure it is something simple and probably obvious to everyone else (smile).]

I think you just hit <enter>. My canine sleeping bag was made by Coleman. Fritz learned how to use it and quite likes it--on a cold night, you'd see him as a big lump at the back of it. It's still a favorite blanket for him to nap on, now that his trail days are behind him.

I will have to look for something for future trips. Thanks.

Milder yes, but 30 to 40 deg with rain is not looking good for a first overnighter with my dog. I would prefer snow to rain. I know I could keep warm overnight but I am not sure how to dry a soaking wet dog or to keep a wet dog warm in temperatures like that once we stop moving. My current plan is to meet at Grovenor and to drive one of the shuttle cars from Sandy Hook to the start on Rte 40. If there is a major change in the forecast, Lulu and I will do the hike as planned. But if the 80% chance of precip is still there, we will just do a day hike a few miles out and back to my car. Repeat: you can still count on my vehicle for the shuttle to the start on Saturday, no matter what weather.

    • Michael Martin

OK, Carolyn, that's helpful. Thanks for communicating. Where were you planning to have the dog sleep beforehand? I know Denise just brings hers into her hammock with her: I have a canine sleeping bag for Fritz, back when he used to be able. Yeah, rain at these temperatures is about the worst weather for backpacking, sadly ... but it's good practice! :)
