Introduction

Looking to learn from other backpackers.

Describe your backpacking experience and background, please include longest mileage in a day (with pack) and coldest nights out.

Done plenty of hikes around the world with a pack; Mt. Kilimanjaro, Patagonia, and Kalalau Trail. I grew up backpacking in VA. Spent plenty of nights in below freezing temps in the Shenandoah Valley and learned that keeping warm rocks in the sleeping bag was a lot better than sleeping next to a fire. I did the 42-mile Maryland Challenge in 19 hours.

Describe your most recent outdoor adventure. When was it? How did you set it up? Did the weather cooperate? How did it go?

The Big Three: what specific gear (not just brands) do you use for your three-season shelter system, sleep system, and backpack? (It's okay if it isn't ultralight!)

I have a Gossamer Gear G4 backpack (1 lbs), North Face sleeping bag rated to 25 degrees (about 2 or 3 lbs), regular size Thermarest expedition (about 1.5 lbs), small plastic sheet for a ground sheet (weighs nearly nothing) and a 6'x8' tarp (1 lb). My base pack weight about 10 lbs when you include all my other stuff beyond the Big Three.

Help us understand your reason for joining DC UL Backpacking, including your goals for lightening your load and quickening your backpacking pace.

I think skills can compensate for carrying less weight. For example, water management might include being able to read a map to see where water sources are and to plan how much water you really need or don't need to carry, drinking regularly, reducing layers so you don't sweat, or using bleach to treat water instead of carrying a heavy pump filter. Or, if you can build a fire no matter what the weather conditions are, you know you can always keep warm at night and not worry about carrying excess layers. I'm always looking to improve my skills. I hope I can learn from others in this group.

How did you learn about our group? (I'm trying to improve our visibility, so I'm curious.)
