Introduction

Recently moved to West Virginia from Eugene, Oregon to make maps for the National Park Service.

Describe your backpacking experience and background, please include longest mileage in a day (with pack) and coldest nights out.

I've been backpacking for about seven years, all in ultralight style. I worked as a hiking guide for two years in Yellowstone, one year in Colorado, and three years in Denali National Park, where I also spent all my free time backpacking solo and in small groups. I'm comfortable on and off trail in all weather. My longest day with a pack is 27 on-trail, 18 off-. My coldest night out is 10F.

Describe your most recent outdoor adventure. When was it? How did you set it up? Did the weather cooperate? How did it go?

The Big Three: what specific gear (not just brands) do you use for your three-season shelter system, sleep system, and backpack? (It's okay if it isn't ultralight!)

Shelter: MLD Patrol Shelter or Trailstar (with bivy depending on bugs and weather). Sleep system: EE Prodigy 30F (supplemented with puffy clothes if necessary) + Ridgerest. Pack: GoLite Jam for light on-trail. CiloGear 30L for light off-trail. CiloGear 60L for bulkier/heavier/longer trips. I used to go lighter (under 5 lbs base) but have since added some weight for increased durability, ease of use, and sleep comfort.

Help us understand your reason for joining DC UL Backpacking, including your goals for lightening your load and quickening your backpacking pace.

My goals are to 1) Make great friends 2) Experience beautiful places 3) Challenge myself mentally and physically 4) Teach others outdoors and UL skills 5) Continue to add to my knowledge and refine my skills

How did you learn about our group? (I'm trying to improve our visibility, so I'm curious.)
