Introduction

I'm a long-time casual hiker, and occasional camper, who'd like to start backpacking and doing so in an efficient way. I'd love to learn about gear and best practices from more experienced backpackers, while sharing great experiences on the trails.

Describe your backpacking experience and background, please include longest mileage in a day (with pack) and coldest nights out.

I've mostly car camped, going on day hikes. Longest hike with daypack was 16 miles. The coldest night I've experienced was just above freezing.

Describe your most recent outdoor adventure. When was it? How did you set it up? Did the weather cooperate? How did it go?

The Big Three: what specific gear (not just brands) do you use for your three-season shelter system, sleep system, and backpack? (It's okay if it isn't ultralight!)

Looking for UL gear. Right now, I use a 1760g (~4 lb) Deuter Act Lite 65+10 backpack, a 1179g (~2.6 lb) Big Agnes Fly Creek UL2 tent, a 670g (~1.5 lb) Deuter Trek Lite sleeping bag, and a 680g (~1.5 lb) Therm-a-Rest 40th Anniversary self-inflating sleeping pad.

Help us understand your reason for joining DC UL Backpacking, including your goals for lightening your load and quickening your backpacking pace.

I enjoy hiking and camping, and have been looking for a group to do these things with in the DC area. For me, going ultralight isn't the goal, but the means to a goal. I will balance possible weight savings against concerns regarding comfort and safety.

How did you learn about our group? (I'm trying to improve our visibility, so I'm curious.)

I found the group on Meetup.com.

What Steve is saying about this Meetup Group

Great group of people! Many different personalities and levels of experience are represented. Everyone is friendly and helpful, willing to share the benefit of their knowledge. The trips are very well planned--not only the hikes themselves, but meeting arrangements and carpools to get to the trailhead.
