Introduction

Hi, I like walking long distances and elevation. In June 2012 I summitted Denali solo. My longest backpacking trip was a circuit hike of Mt. Annapurna in Nepal.

Describe your backpacking experience and background, please include longest mileage in a day (with pack) and coldest nights out.

Longest mileage in a day with backpack was 26 miles of a 40 mile 2 day trip. Coldest night was in the Adirondacks and Aconcagua in Argentina. I don't have the official temperatures but it must have been atleast 10 below zero.

Describe your most recent outdoor adventure. When was it? How did you set it up? Did the weather cooperate? How did it go?

Sad to say but most recent was summitting Denali in June 2012. I need to get out more. Unfortunately work gets in the way. I went solo but met a few Japanese at base camp. I ended staying with them most of the way except at the higher camps from where I went solo. The weather ultimately cooperated.

The Big Three: what specific gear (not just brands) do you use for your three-season shelter system, sleep system, and backpack? (It's okay if it isn't ultralight!)

I use a 20 degree oversize down bag (blue Kazoo). I also used a down pants from Western mountaineering and an EMS down jacket when sleeping. My backpack is a 50L pack. My tent is either a rain pancho or a tarp in combination with a bug bivvy.

Help us understand your reason for joining DC UL Backpacking, including your goals for lightening your load and quickening your backpacking pace.

I had modified my down gear when I climbed Denali. I am planning on further customizing every aspect of my clothing and gear and test them out on higher and colder mountains. I need the knowledge and support of experienced do it yourself kind of tinkerers. My friend is an UL guy who is doing the entire PCT trail (2650 miles) starting April 18th. I will be designing gear for him and supporting him by backpacking sections with him

How did you learn about our group? (I'm trying to improve our visibility, so I'm curious.)

  • How do you do that all in one day? Aren't they different trail heads? Is there a map or details out there to read? I am really interested. Is it definitely Sunday?

  • Hi, how do you reply to a message?? All I could find is this greeting... anyway, we should talk about Aconcagua..... I'm planning to go to Patagonia in January. Sometimes I want to go back to Ojos del Salado, the 2nd highest with NO people and much cheaper and more remote. I got close to the top last March. But I really want to go way SOUTH. I'm in Seattle right now. Leaving for Mt Rainier on Monday. I could still consider Aconcagua...

  • Oh. We are considering a hike, down into the Grand Canyon and back up in one day, this year. Anyone back there interested in coming out?
