Introduction

The Year of Outside!! I LOVE endurance hiking, endurance running, camping, skiing & enjoying the beauty of nature by total immersion into it.

Describe your backpacking experience and background, please include longest mileage in a day (with pack) and coldest nights out.

My major intent this year is to spend as much time as possible OUTSIDE. As of now, my experience with regards to backpacking includes two outings with DC UL, the ONLY group I feel I belong with. Everyone in the group is so knowledgeable, and I get excited to go, just to find out what the adventure will be the next time! I've learned to never predict the mountains. 17 degrees all night in a shelter on the AT in Catawba, possibly lower temps on the ridge on North Mountain in a 20 degree Western Mountaineering Bag and Tarptent (borrowed :)). I really have no idea anymore as to the longest mileage in one day, most likely around 16 miles.

Describe your most recent outdoor adventure. When was it? How did you set it up? Did the weather cooperate? How did it go?

I was just out this weekend for my second trip with DC UL. After having purchased a ULA CDT pack, I feel I'm on my way regarding gear. Until I get more, I soak it up, watching, listening and learning from veterans. I've never had better people to learn anything from, as they (& now me as well) are so diverse with regards to experience and gear. This weekend was a true winter backpacking trip, and it taught me so much (hand warmers and water resistant gloves, among a few other necessities). It was a GREAT adventure!

The Big Three: what specific gear (not just brands) do you use for your three-season shelter system, sleep system, and backpack? (It's okay if it isn't ultralight!)

Tarps come in handy, in my experience. I'm MOST comfortable in a down sleeping bag with sleeping pad under & liner inside. I possess a ULA CDT pack, prefer the Tarptent to sleep in so far, thanks to members of the group allowing me to borrow & try out their equipment.

Help us understand your reason for joining DC UL Backpacking, including your goals for lightening your load and quickening your backpacking pace.

I'm a massage practitioner & know the human body well. Carrying heavy packs slows you down & puts wear & tear on your shoulders, neck, back & lower joints. It's not as healthy as ultralight. I love the idea of simple bare necessities rather than bringing your house with you. Be prepared, but keep it simple, light. Sounds like a lot of fun to me. Not to mention better on the body & also quite challenging. The lighter the load, the faster you go. Simple, small, light cookwear, utensils, etc. Plus, I need people to go with! :)

How did you learn about our group? (I'm trying to improve our visibility, so I'm curious.)

  • Denise, why don't you see if you could make my low mileage February trip? The one into Harpers Ferry? If we can get you equipped for the temperatures, that would be ideal. The hiking is rather gentle.
