Introduction

Hi, I'm a pretty frequent day-hiker and have been wanting to get out on more backpacking trips -- or just to meet new people. My gear isn't really all 'ultra-light', but I'm comfortable with it.

Describe your backpacking experience and background, please include longest mileage in a day (with pack) and coldest nights out.

Hiking? I put in 12-20+ miles a week, pretty much every week from May --> October. I've done almost every decent loop hike in a three hour radius of Baltimore / DC. Backpacking? A little pathetic. I do a couple of single-night backpacks (20-30 miles) a year, but haven't done a mutli-night trip in...well, it's been awhile. Longest mileage in a day w/pack. Hmmm, 18 miles / 4500' while carrying 5-7L of water + stuff (not so UL). In fairness, though, it wasn't all that hot and I was happy to sit my ass down afterwards. Coldest? I've woken up to 11 degrees F where my breath has frozen solid on the outside of my very comfortable sleeping bag (not so UL, either)...

Describe your most recent outdoor adventure. When was it? How did you set it up? Did the weather cooperate? How did it go?

The Big Three: what specific gear (not just brands) do you use for your three-season shelter system, sleep system, and backpack? (It's okay if it isn't ultralight!)

I had a huge, clunky REI half-dome that needs replacing. It's circa 1996 REI heft. I have a decent 20 degree bag and a exceedingly clunky external frame pack (also circa '96) that I love dearly.

Help us understand your reason for joining DC UL Backpacking, including your goals for lightening your load and quickening your backpacking pace.

I'd like to join to backpack with people who enjoy getting outdoors. My pace sounds like a good fit, so I guess I'd also be down for ways to cut lbs -- or an excuse to pick up some non circa-'96 gear!

How did you learn about our group? (I'm trying to improve our visibility, so I'm curious.)
