Why: Since Russian President Vladimir Putin returned to office, the Russian government has clamped down hard on free expression and assembly, attempting to silence critical voices and curtail the growing protest movement.
This month Russian courts refused to grant parole to Masha Alyokhina and Nadya Tolokonnikova, imprisoned members of the feminist punk group Pussy Riot, more than 16 months after they were arrested for a “Punk Prayer” in Moscow’s Christ the Savior Cathedral. Meanwhile, LGBTI rights are also under attack.
Masha and Nadya should never have been arrested in the first place. Like thousands of other Russians, they were deprived of their freedom for daring to engage peaceful protest.
Oppression thrives in silence. That is why we must loudly demand that Russian authorities free Pussy Riot and respect human rights in Russia! Will your voice be heard? Join local DC artists and Amnesty International USA as we raise our voices in a punk protest outside the Russian Embassy!
