Weekend in Boston

This will be our first outing where we will spend Saturday and Sunday in Boston, Massachusetts!

On Saturday, we will venture around the historic districts and popular sites of the city.  Our first stops will include the historic sites of Boston Commons, the Old State House, and the Beacon Hill neighborhood.  We will then eat lunch, rest, and shop at Faneuil Hall.  Faneuil Hall is a historic marketplace in downtown Boston that features many shops, food vendors, and various restaurants.  We will spend the rest of the afternoon and evening venturing to the Paul Revere House, Boston Harbor, and the North End neighborhood, which is the oldest neighborhood in Boston and home to one of the city’s largest Italian communities.

We will conclude the evening with dinner in North End and an evening activity, such as a jazz club, a lounge, or walking the city to view the sights.  I am open for any suggestions.

On Sunday, we will take a tour around some of the well known neighborhoods of Boston such as Charlestown, and Back Bay.  We will walk to Charlestown and visit the USS Constitution as well as the Bunker Hill Monument.  We will also take the subway to Cambridge, Massachusetts and venture around the world-renown Harvard University campus and eat lunch at Harvard Square, one of Cambridge’s upscale and quaint squares.  We will end the tour at the Back Bay neighborhood with dinner, sightseeing, shopping, and any other activities that Boston has to offer.

Our last stop will be the SkyWalk Observatory at the Prudential Center, which offers 360 degree views of the city from 52 floors above the street.  Tickets are $14.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  I will keep continual communication with the group several times before the date of the trip to follow up with members, notify attendees of any changes to the schedule, and to send important information that is needed for the trip.

Can't get out of being on call for that weekend.

    March 3, 2013

  • Kim

Very strong tentative, leaning towards Yes. This would be an ideal wkend geatway, considering my birthday is just a few days prior. I'm also considering flying from DCA to BOS the night before/morning of (1.5 hr flight).

Is anyone still interested in sharing room costs? The Boston Commons appears to not have any double-bed rooms available (as of this morning, 3/1). So, my alternate choice will likely be the Hilton Boston Back Bay (AAA rate of $227/tax included).

    March 1, 2013

    • Kim

Hi Ronda, Thanks for the info. It's actually a great rate for Sat/Sun nights; the only downside is that it's a fully non-refundable (just in case). I'll still keep it close in mind.

      March 1, 2013

    • Ronda

No problem. I've already booked my flight, so I'm going! :-)

      March 1, 2013

  • Candida J.

The rate at the Hilton Back Bay is $119 for a King bed, advanced purchase and $170 for two double beds.

Hello all, I am from Boston-grew up there and family still lives there. Might I suggest if you are looking for some excellent Jazz, try Scullers. Itinerary looks good. Dress warm as Boston is like Chicago---windy and brutally cold even in March. Snow should be melted some, but depending on snow mounds be prepared for the dirty. I am sorry I can't go, checking out my favorite Jazz artist in NY that weekend. But, have some major fun!

    February 27, 2013

    • Mario J.

Hello Linda. Thanks for the suggestion for Jazz venues as well as the weather information. Have fun in New York and hope to see you at future meetups!

    February 13, 2013

Hello Erica. For those who choose a different hotel to stay at, we will discuss a meeting point where everyone can meet in the morning before traveling. The meeting point will be chosen either a few days before the trip or the morning we arrive in Boston.

Unfortunately, I will not be able to make this trip. I was looking forward to it. However, I did find out that the hotel is around the corner from the Boston - Back Bay train station for those of you looking to take the train. Seems Mega Bus is stopping at Boston's South Boston Amtrak station. Have fun!

what is the advantage of catching the train?

    January 31, 2013

    • A former member
      A former member

Hi Corrine, the biggest advantage is that you can get up and walk around on the train. You have more space. The bathroom facilities are full sized. There is a cafe on the train. You do not have traffic problems. It's a long ride and the train is just more comfortable.

      1 · February 1, 2013

    • Corrine S.

All of that makes perfect sense...lol. Thanks Gail.

Mario, I just found Amtrak tickets for $140 roundtrip and it will get you there around the same time. If anyone is interested, I will be taking Amtrak.

Ok. Thanks for letting me know.

      January 30, 2013

Tammy does the train for $140 leave from Union Station? I am departing from Manassas and it costs $190

      February 1, 2013

  • Corrine S.

    How much is the train?

    January 30, 2013

    • Candida J.

The fare is $169 RT from DC.

      January 31, 2013

    • Candida J.
