Skills Demo : sharpening irons, working green lumber

  • Feb 17, 2014 · 6:45 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

We'll gather at The Shop to look at a few techniques for sharpening chisels, plane irons, and other fine hand tools. Attendees are encouraged to bring a jack plane and try their hand at sharpening, as well as some basic material hogging techniques.

Some of us will attempt to split logs and hew them into lumber.
Those who want to get the most out of this meeting should buy a hatchet, sharpen it, and carefully play with some methods of splitting, carving, and shaping wood. The tool may appear dangerous or heavy handed at first, but the experience is a fantastic way to develop a stronger understanding of the wood as a fibrous material. We will have discussion time to share findings and ask questions.

Getting to the building may be tricky. Some typical mistakes are forgetting that it is in NORTHEAST, and not knowing where to find entry into the build. haha, but it is true. There is a parking lot in the rear (south of NY Ave), enter from the junction between 4th and Penn St. If you are coming from the metro, head up 4th and enter the parking lot at right, just before you get to NY Ave. The building entrance in through the loading docks, SouthWest corner. I will put up some signs, but if you are really lost, call me at[masked]

If you would like to bring your own planes, hatchet, chisels, or sharpening stones, please do.

Excited to learn, do not have any tools, supplies etc. Would it be most beneficial to get a hatchet for this?
