Hiking at Bull Run Conservatory & trip to Winery

The last hike was so much fun we are going to do it again!!!  This time we will be hiking the Bull Run Mountains Conservancy Natural Area Preserve. The hike is about 6 miles long and includes a stop at the Beverley Mill ans an elevation gain of 1,080 feet that takes us to the Elvis Rock overlook. We'll be hiking at a moderate pace and the difficulty is considered moderate. Below are the directions to the park and a trail map:

directions - http://www.brmconservancy.org/area_map.html

trail - http://www.brmconservancy.org/trail_map.html

We will meet at the gate by the railroad tracks at 1:00pm and then head out for the hike at 1:15pm. The hike will take about 3 hours and afterwards we will head over to La Grange Winery which is about 1o minutes away:

We will be doing a potluck picnic at the winery so those interested in joining in please bring a food item with you. They have an area with picnic tables that we can set up at. Those who want to go do a wine tasting can and those that just want to get a bottle of wine and hang out at the picnic area can. Looking forward to seeing you all there.

I had a great time. Happy to have met such a diverse group of people with one thing in mind... have a relaxing day, and lots of laughs.

I'm not a regular hiker, so this 6 miles going up the hill half the time was definitely a challenge but a great workout. Although I suffer from seasonal allergies it was so worth it to be out and about. Met lots of cool people. I'll try to come out more often from now on and not hibernate for 2 years again! :)

Had an unexpected plan change, so couldn't get out there until 3, but did the hike anyway (first time) and loved it. Gorgeous day. So, thanks for the tip and hope to catch the group next time!

Me too...my unexpected plan change was that I got so lazy I couldn't even make a 1:00 pm hike! Really it's just that I had to drive 75 miles and there was nobody to carpool with.

      May 12, 2013

    • Stacey

Chris yes I can pick you up at the Ballston metro stop at 1145am. Please note that I'll be going to the winery for a few hours if not more after the hike so we will not be back to Arlington until after 8pm

i' ve done this hike many times . The boulders at the top can be slippery, and the trail will have muddy spots,it always does after a rain for a few days.it's a fairly exhausting hike to the top, there are several trails steep ,steeper , and steepest, the steeper the trail the shorter the walk to the top.

I am looking forward to my first adventure with the group. I will be driving from Leesburg- if anyone in the area needs a ride please don't hesitate to call (304)[masked]

    Some additional answers to questoins:

boots are not required but a good idea though a sturdy pair of walking shoes will also do well

since we need to drive from the trailhead to the winery if you are bringing food for the potluck it is best to leave it in your car and then get it out when we get to the winery. we have plenty of cheese, crackers, salad & desserts so far so if you are still figuring out what to bring we still need some more side dishes and main dishes like chicken wings, meatballs or deli meats.

about a mile of the hike is a trail that goes straight up to the overlook so it is a good idea to bring water and snacks. we will hang out at the ovelook for about 20 minutes to have time to take in the view

its also a good idea to bring sun screen since it is suppse to be a sunny day

Would like to bring a camera. Are boots recommended or good walking shoes?

    May 11, 2013

  • Darya

so if people are going to bring potluck food, are they going to carry it with them through the whole hike? And who is bringing what so far?

It is probally too early in the season but please be careful for ticks. The first time I went with my wife we had serious small ticks and also those bites leave the ring around it. Wear spray.
