White Oak/Cedar Run water falls + a lot of swimming holes to refresh 8 mile loop

White Oak and Cedar Run water falls

+ a lot of swimming holes to refresh.

A wonderful world of wispy hemlock and cascading water. White Oak canyon is a part of the life of the mountains you will miss if you stay on the road.

The water cascades over a wonderland of rocks and pools that will tempt you to go wading.

In a little over a mile you will come to the first of a series of falls. Here the trail gets steeper and you will want to take it slowly.

One of Shenandoah National Park's most popular destinations is Whiteoak Canyon and its six waterfalls, with heights from 35 to 86 feet.

There are swimming holes at the bottom of each waterfall, but do not expect much privacy because they are quite popular.

White Oak Cayon itself is one of the best waterfall hikes in the Park. This hike isn't very difficult.
Although this hike can be steep in sections it is still ok for younger children as the trail is well maintained and doesn't require any creek crossing without footbridges.

Being one of the most popular hikes in the park it can be very busy in the peak seasons of spring and fall.

This hike has some of the most spectacular waterfalls in the Shenandoah National Park. and combine two out-and-back hikes, White Oak Canyon + Cedar Run, this loop starts at the bottom of the valley and cuts over near the top of the ridge.

With five major falls, numerous smaller cascades and pools, this circuit hike is one of the best.

NOTE: We will be moving as faster as the slower hiker, no need to rum in this one...yea, this is my way to straight things and make-up whit the ones that follow me the last hike and keep all of then running.

Gear list, What you need to bring:
1.) Day backpack
2.) Snacks/food for your self.
3.) Camel bag/bottle or similar for drinking water.
4.) 2 liters of water.
5.) Swimsuit / sun blocker / towel / etc.
6.) A good attitude and a big smile on your face.

Any of my new friends interested in paddle boarding this Saturday? I plan to be at Key Bridge Boathouse at 8 a.m. I'm not an instructor, I can't give a docent tour of the landmarks along the river, and the chance of me paddling in a kilt is pretty low. That being said, if anyone wants to meet up - the more the merrier. Hope to see a few familiar faces!

P.S. Loved all the great pics from our White Oak Canyon/Cedar Run hike! A big thanks to everyone who shared their pics!

Darwin, I plan to do the Savage River dam release in September. This would be a good group outing. I'll have to check the date and get back to you. Constant Class III and IV whitewater though.

We didn't meet or find you all at the park:( Apparently we ended up in the wrong parking lot also. However, we met a small group of people from this meetup group who started at Vienna metro but somehow became separated from the rest of you all. Then we found out that The White Oak/Cedar Run water falls route was flooded and we had no way of contacting the organizer (aka Darwin). We were not happy about that. We took an alternate trail and it ended up being very long and strenuous, so much so that my friend hurt both of her knees. I would suggest to Darwin for next time to find out the conditions of the planned path, especially if the destination is 2 hours away and to also have a better way of communication with all the members so that no one gets left behind. Again, we still had fun, no matter how exhausting or sometimes scary it might have been, but it would've been cool to see the waterfalls route still and meet up with the WHOLE group as opposed to a part of it.

What's with with the "aka Darwin" bit? Dial down the contempt a tad and maybe you'll get some sympathy.

@ Sara Mushero - Thank you so much for the pictures.

    1 · July 15, 2013

    Darwin,

Your response to Darya was extremely rude and condescending. Name-calling, especially when pointed toward a stranger who was looking to you for direction is a display of a lack of good leadership. Darya made no insult to you and had only related her experience. A good leader would have acknowledged the issue and taken the suggestions in mind for future trips, rather than blaming and shaming others. Sure, Darwin is not responsible for the injury that Darya's friend sustained, but better communication and more foresight on his part would have helped to prevent the miscommunications that arose.

I was in one of the cars that was also separated from the main group, and I thoroughly enjoyed my time in the alternative hike we took. I had so much fun that I was planning on coming to future meetup trips and even returning to do the hike that was originally planned. However, after reading Darwin's response, his insolent demeanor has turned me off from all future trips organized by him.

    1 · July 15, 2013

    • Linda

      1. Calling the destination the morning of the event PRIOR to departure. When organizing an outdoor trip, there is always the possibility of closures due to weather. It is the responsibility of the organizer to check in with local event authorities (in this case the rangers at Shenandoah National Park) for recent updates.

      2. Creating an easily accessible backup meeting spot in case people get separated or roads/trails are closed - this is critical in trips where the destination is 2 hours away and you know that cell service may be an issue. Even travelling to the location caravan-style may be helpful here to ensure that the group stays together.

Let these also serve as suggestions for future organizers (assuming that others are more humble and receptive than Darwin). I thoroughly enjoyed meeting new people while on this adventure, even if it was left out of the main group, and I plan on attending more adventures in the future, as long as it's a different organizer!

Darya, not sure where you got your info, but the group hiked White Oak/Cedar run just like the meet up said we would. Sure the water was up a little and the stream crossings were a bit of an adventure, but we all made it in one piece. I think you are putting a little too much blame on others for things everyone else seemed to manage just fine.

For the drivers: Coming from DC or the other way take 66 to exit 62 them forward Nutle st. north, continue to first light and make a left turn, two blocks from there is Vienna Metro, go to the first parking lot, no way you can miss us there.
