Potomac Heritage Trail Hike

Now that summer is here please come join me for an 8 mile out and back hike on the Potomac Heritaqe Trail. We'll start at the Roosevelt Island parking lot and head north along the Potomac Heritage Trail (PHT). This stretch is fairly rugged so wear good hiking shoes or boots. Reports from others who have recently hiked the PHT say that there is a fair amount of rock scrambling/climbing and stream crossings. Only bring your dog if you are prepared to carry them. We'll hike about 4 miles north along the river to Chain Bridge. Once we arrive there we will turn around and head back the way we came unless the group decides it wants a change of pace and then we can cross over to the Maryland side of the river and head south along the C&O Canal towpath.  If we decide on this route we will have a pleasant 3 mile stroll south along the Canal until we reach Georgetown. Depending on how we feel, we can stop at the Georgetown Waterfront for a few drinks and snacks or go just cross back to Rosslyn on the Key Bridge and head to our cars at Roosevelt Island. The starting and finishing point at the Roosevelt Island parking lot can easily be reached via car or metro:

CAR: Click on location above where you can add your address and get directions.  Theodore Roosevelt Island parking lot can only be reached from the northbound lanes of the George Washington Memorial Parkway.  Shortly after the Memorial Bridge, follow the sign to turn right to enter the parking lot. The trailhead (pictured below) is just as you turn into the parking lot.

METRO: Orange Line to Rossyln Metro.  From the station, walk toward Key Bridge.  A short connecting trail leads downhill from the downstream side of the bridge, across the parkway, and into the parking lot. We will meet at the Potomac Heritage Trail sign pictured below which is located just as you turn into the parking lot:

It is best to be prepared for the hike so hiking shoes or boots are best to wear. Hiking poles are also helpful especially if you have bad knees or ankles. As it is summer time please make sure you bring plenty of water. It's also important to have healthy snacks to munch as you hike as it will take about 3.5 hours to complete. Hope to see you all out there.

    Thanks for all of you that came out yesterday and braved the heat for the hike. Good to hear that you had a good time. Sorry I did not get to hike alongside and chat with more of you but wanted to make sure that everyone was doing okay so stayed closer to the the back of the pack. Thanks to those out front who helped lead the way. Looking forward to seeing you again on my next hike.

    @Stacey-
    No problem , i like Hiking too.

    Rajesh - just wanted to let you know that there will be no climbing as part of this hike. There will be a few sections that have a rock scramble but that just means you neeed to pull yourself up over the rocks as you are hiking. Some sections will be like the billy goat trail if you have ever done that hike.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
