Rapelling Deep Into Caves

of West Virginia & Explore

(BEGINNERS WELCOME)

30 Foot Rapel into the Depths of a Cave is the Final Frontier-- come for a REAL ADVENTURE!  This is one of our coolest and most fun events! For you folks that have never been caving/spelunking/rappelling make sure to check this off your ‘to do’ list!! The winter is the perfect time to do this event because you do not get too warm! We have knowledgeable guides who will go through caving practices, rapelling guidelines, and safety-oriented instruction.

If you've been to our CAVING in West Virginia then this is a Step Beyond what you've seen.

Rapelling is definately more advanced than crawling around on your knees -- but wait till you get to base of the cave... Take a buddy and Explore on your knees the nooks & crannies or what lies beneath. :)

WARNING:  This event is guided by professionals. HOWEVER, there are some folks that are uncomfortable with the dark, tight spaces or with heights. If this is the case then your welcome to pass to this event.

DEPARTURE TIME:

9:00am: Meet at Shady Grove Metro stlation for pick up OR

9:45am: Meet at Clock tower on German Street in Shepherdstown, WV

2:30pm depart cave:  Head back to drop folks off in Shepherdstown,WV by 3PM.

Return to Shady Grove Metro Station by 4:00pm

PRICE: $110.00/pp (transportation cost - included.  If you decide to drive seperately there is no discount.) 12 slots only.

WHAT TO WEAR: Did we mention that caving is a DIRTY sport? (Just my kind of sport!) Wear your oldest, flexible clothing and old shoes that still have a tread.

WHAT WE SUPPLY: We will supply super stylish cavesuits (you may easily be confused w/ the local jailbirds). We'll also supply helmets with headlamps and knee pads. Don't bother bringing a flashlight-- you'll need your hands for scrambling!  We will also provide all the gear for rapelling.

WHAT TO BRING: Make sure to bring lunch or snacks to share, and a bottle of water for after caving. Waterproof gloves with help keep your hands warm.

CARPOOL: Don’t forget if you want a ride or are willing to offer a ride – be a friend to the environment, save money, and make friends by just posting a message!! Have a ride: Please post where you are coming from, what time, and how many spots you have. Need a ride: Post that you need a ride and contact any offers via e-mail for those that are offering rides.

Let’s go exploring!

I had a blast yesterday--awesome group too! I added my pics that turned out, enjoy! =)

Alicia, I wouldn't recommend that. There's a lot of climbing, crawling, rocks, mud, water... Basically all things that cameras usually hate. Steph got lucky with hers, but it was also a small point and shoot that was less likely to get crunched. I do think we had one camera casualty on the trip...

I agree with Mike, I hung a little Canon sd100 in a waterproof bag around my neck and even so it now sports an elegant (and probably badass) layer of mud. Don't bring anything you would hate to get terribly muddy!

For anyone meeting at the clock tower, we are running a little behind schedule but are on the way now.

    • Richard

They are saying roughly 30 minutes still. We just got off of 70 onto 66. We'd left about 15/20 minutes late but I'm thinking that 9:45 meet up time doesn't take into account the right drive time

      January 4, 2014

      Walking over now

In light of the weather, can someone confirm that tomorrow is still a go? Thanks

    2 · January 3, 2014

    • Richard

      It's absolutely still on!

Mikey, I'm bringing a jacket along. Better to have too many layers than not enough. I'd imagine we can leave them on the bus if they aren't needed.

Richard, I was worrying more about the time spent waiting outside the cave while we waited for a dozen inexperienced rappellers to get down :) I don't think the cave is near where the bus can park, is it?

I am driving from Luray, VA so I will meet everyone at the clock tower. We have room for two if anyone else is coming from this direction. See you Saturday!

I'm going to drive from Herndon and will meet everyone at the clocktower in Shepherdstown.

If anyone wants to meet me at the Herndon-Monroe Park & Ride around 8:30 I can take 3 passengers.

Kelly, if you're still going with the date change, I'm definitely interested in carpooling.

Oh man, I haven't been caving since college! I'm super stoked!

Also, I'd love a road trip out through the mountains. I can fit 4 in my car comfortably, if anyone needs a ride. (I can squeeze a 5th but it would be cozy.) I'll be coming from the Bethesda/Rockville area.
