Long distance Day Hike-North Fork Mountain Traverse (23 mi, 8K+ ft)

23 mile , 8k+ ft Long distance day Hike.

This is NOT by any means your regular hike on the woods.

Some of the best views and sweeping vistas of the Monongahela are on this trail and with that comes the high elevation climbs and colder weather up top.

Challenging and totally worth it. We will do this rain, snow, or shine.

This is a "one way" long distance day hike South to North traverse and we will do it this way because the elevation gain will be minimal for us, we will star at 1.300 foot elevation at the trail head an end at 3.592 feet.

The trail is wide and easy to follow as it travels and old road grade along the ridge crest, the hike star whit a series of easy climbs and descents gradually increasing on elevation and take in the views such as Chimney Top, there are many more views and vistas all along the ridge and still more climbs.

How we are going to do this?
We will meet at Vienna Metro at 8:00 PM and drive  ( 2 hr 40 min ) to camping area witch is only 20 minutes  away from end of trail hike (Point B on driving map) expend the night there, next day very early in the morning (4-5 am) after break camp and take breakfast we will drive to end of hike trail-head and leave 1 or 2 cars (depending on amount of hikers attending) for shuttle back when we finish the hike, from there we will go to star point of hike area (C on driving map)

Gear required:
Tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, backpacker cooking stove, dry food., extra set of clots to change when driving back home.
Gear to be carry on day hike:
Day pack, 3-4 Lt. water since the is NOT water supply on the trail to refill, plenty of snacks, comfortable boots or trail runners, rain suit (we never know), wool hat, gloves, extra layer to keep your self warn, head lamp, small garbage bag.

This was an excellent trip. Everyone was so nice, and incredibly full of energy and hiking knowledge! Darwin was an especially great guide and made it all look so easy (though it wasn't easy!). I'm very happy I attended this as my first meetup and look forward to seeing everyone again on future hikes!

The best weather we can hope for a hike like this one. Chilly nights but not body dye of hypothermia.
Great group of strong adventures souls, my hat out to the newbies that endurance a 24 miles day hike as they first, it was hard that's for sure and a priceless happy face when they saw the road at the end of the trek.

This will be my first event with this group and I'm very excited for it. I love hiking and being outdoors, especially now that the weather is finally warming up. I also love challenging myself and this hike sounds like it will be one. It's definitely a one day hike though, right? We'll be heading back on Saturday evening? Or is there a chance we'll be camping out again on Saturday evening and heading back on Sunday morning? I ask because I have an event on Sunday morning that I need to attend.

    March 13, 2014

    • Darwin

I do recommend to camp again Saturday since we will ending the hike late in the evening or first hours on the night and also we will be "totally" burn-out to drive in that conditions which will be dangerous because you may fall sleep will driving.
Sunday morning we will be well recover and ready to drive back home.

      March 17, 2014

    • Minh Thu N.

Oh in that case, I won't be able to join this time then since I have an event early the next morning on Sunday. Hopefully, you'll have more events like this as I'd love to attend.

If you have any question about this hike please don't hesitate to ask.
