GWNF area-Long distance day hike series #3 - 24+ miles

George Washington National Forest
Big Schloss and Tibbet  Knob combine day hike
24+ miles 5700 feet elevation gain.

Training hike towards following Extreme Day Hikes Series.

----------------------------------------------------------------
IMPORTANT: This hike IS NO for the faint of heart and/or the weak knee. This is a very long distance hikes and for some it may be extreme. You are solely and completely responsible for choosing outings that are within your physical and medical ability level, for taking proper clothing, provisions, and equipment along on outings to provide for your personal comfort and safety and for making appropriate decisions to ensure you own safety.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Big Schloss is another treasure in the George Washington National Forest. Relatively easy at only 4.4 miles and 1,000 vertical feet, it's the sister hike of Tibbet Knob which heads to the south from the same parking location.
Tibbet Knob has two short rock scrambles, but is a 10 for the hikers and just as good views...but when we combine both hikes and to make it more interesting from a different point of approach we have a killing 24+ miles hike with unique views.

We will camp Friday night at Wolf Gap Campground (is free) instead of driving at midnight, from there we will drive to trailhead, wake-up call 4 am, hike start at 5 am

      September 5

  • Sol

That will work, i will try to find a pad or rough it out. I am in crystal city so I can pick you up. Would 8-8:15pm pick up work for you?

    September 5

    • James M.

@Darwin, I can definitely meet at Vienna, but I wasn't sure there would be space in this car

      September 5

    • Darwin

Im sure it will, now be have 2 rentals, one is already full, the second ( Sol driving) have room for 3 more

      1 · September 5

  • Darwin

@ ALL - Look guys, SOL does not live on the area, he don't know the area, PLEASE go to Vienna metro, that will be easy for everyone.
Once there we will arrange carpool.

    September 5

  • Sol

Mine will be around $50 for a full size car

    1 · September 5

  • Ann

What's the total for getting two rental cars?

    September 5

  • Sol

Hi, I will not be able to camp out as I am on travel here w no camping gear so will need to meet you all at trailhead. I will be getting a rental car as well or if Trevor has similar plan I can get a ride with you. Anyone else need a ride?

    September 5

    • Trevor

Darwin may have extra gear. The best / lest expensive option would be if you could rent a car and we divide the people between the two cars. The 7 person van is really expensive.

      1 · September 5

    • Darwin

@ SOL - I do have an extra tent and sleeping bag but I do not have an extra sleeping pad.

      September 5

  • Sol

Sounds like a good plan. I will wait for Darwin to respond on gear issue. What time do you all plan to leave today as I need to make arrangements?

    September 5

    • Trevor

Meetup posting says 8:30PM meet at Vienna. I work in Alexandria so I'll probably leave work around 3-330, take the Metro to Spring Hill and pick up the rental at Budget by 5PM. Then i'll waste some time maybe at Smashburger and meet everyone at the Vienna Metro entrance.

      September 5

  • Darwin

Have anyone get in contact with Sol?

    September 4

    • Trevor

I went ahead and booked a cheap car too since there's to cancellation penalty.

      1 · September 4

    • Darwin

we are 5 confirmed, maybe cheaper rental will be enough

      2 · September 4

  • Sol

Jon, Nelly, if we don't find rides let me know if you would like to chip in and we can get a rental car.

    3 · August 24

    • Ann

If you guys still have room, I can chip in as well- I"m coming from NW DC like Jon

  • Darwin

ATTENTION ALL - Two of our members are "ready" to rent a car for the weekend, everyone riding with any of them will have to share cost in equal parts gas & rental.
Before they do that WE NEED to hear from you, can you drive? As alway riders will help with gas $$

      August 28

  • Darwin

@ Nely-Lidia - Look girls, we may be lucky if actually somebody want to give us a ride in the middle of the night and drive 4 hr. many prefer to drive after work time that's why, also I'm sure you two will appreciate a few hours of sleep beauty or am I wrong?

    2 · August 26

  • Lidia C. Z.

Why are we camping? it's only 24 miles.

    1 · August 26

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
