Thanks for the suggestions. I had failed to mention I am trying to debug a django app. I'm going to give pycharm a try.

PDB is what I had tried and given up on many times. I would love if someone would give a talk on pdb/winpdb.

I've seen this in action, and it is very nice.  Since I generally have
control over the server processes, this isn't something I miss myself.

And as Jim points out, the emacs integration is very nice.  Ken Mannheimer
is truly an elisp hero.
