Performance Timing: Approximately 1 hour, with no intermission

The Jefferson Lecture in the Humanities, established by the National Endowment for the Humanities in 1972, is the highest honor the federal government confers for distinguished intellectual achievement in the humanities. The lectureship recognizes an individual who has made significant scholarly contributions in the humanities and who has the ability to communicate the knowledge and wisdom of the humanities in a broadly appealing way.

ABOUT FILM DIRECTOR MARTIN SCORSESE

Martin Charles Scorsese (born 1942) is an Italian-American film director, screenwriter, producer, actor, and film historian and widely regarded as one of the greatest directors of all time. In 1990 he founded The Film Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to film preservation, and in 2007 he founded the World Cinema Foundation. He is a recipient of the AFI Life Achievement Award for his contributions to the cinema, and has won an Academy Award, a Palme d'Or, Best Director Award (Cannes Film Festival), Silver Lion, Grammy Award, Emmys, Golden Globes, BAFTAs, and DGA Awards.

Scorsese's body of work addresses such themes as Italian American identity, Roman Catholic concepts of guilt and redemption, machismo, modern crime, and violence. Scorsese is hailed as one of the most significant and influential filmmakers of all time, directing landmark films such as Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull , and Goodfellas – all of which he collaborated on with actor and close friend Robert De Niro. He has been nominated for Best Director 7 times and won the Academy Award for directing The Departed (2006).
