PIAZZA FONTANA: THE ITALIAN CONSPIRACY -
"ROMANZO DI UNA STRAGE".
Directed by Marco Tullio GIORDANA
ITALY, 2012, color, 128 min. (In Italian with English subtitles)
With Valerio Mastandrea, Pierfrancesco Favino, Michela Cescon.
The 1968–69 students + blue collar workers led resistance against the establishment, an European-wide schools and workplaces insurrection and a street-movement against Italy’s fossilised traditions, eventually developed into acts of terrorisms, culminating in foolish violence against innocent citizens inside a Milano's bank.
Filmaker Marco Tullio GIORDANA (The Best of Youth) delivers a Machiavellian drama, based on a book by Paolo Cucchiarelli, which dissects the PIAZZA FONTANA bank bombing, during Italy’s politically charged tension and violence of the late 1960's and 1970's ... cioe' gli anni della "strategia della tensione" - "strategy of tension" years 1969~1980, a very complex movement of terror by BOTH the political left and right aimed at destabilizing the Italian democratic system during the Cold War era to bring about either of the political extremes: Anarchy/communism of the left OR a police state of the right - fascism)... The film director highlights the manipulations and tragic consequences of the event and subsequent investigations.
A terrorist explosion inside BANCA NAZIONALE DELL’AGRICOLTURA @ PIAZZA FONTANA in downtown Milano on 12 December 1969 resulted in 17 deaths and injured 88 more innocent bystanders. The protests sweeping Europe and the fear of communism led the police to focus their investigations on anarchist groups.
But the Police Commissioner (Commissario) Luigi Calabresi (Valerio Mastandrea) is convinced it’s not that simple. When known non-violent protestor Giuseppe Pinelli (an anarchist railway worker) dies after falling from the fourth floor window of a Milan's police station where he was being held, Calabresi’s enquiries reveal a conspiracy to discredit the "Left" by the "neo-fascists", foreign and state governments, the police, the Italian secret service with possible CIA connections ...
Intriguingly complicated and politically nuanced, ROMANZO DI UNA STRAGE is an ever-twisting conspiracy of lies, intrigue and dirty politics. The meticulously staged real life story is both enthralling and gripping…
ITALY IS STILL BEGGING FOR AN ANSWER: 42 anni dopo... Ed ancora non si sanno i colpevoli!!! 42 years later... and yet the culprits remain unknown!!! Fu un atto di terrorismo perpetrato da quelli dell'estrema destra (neofascisti) o sinistra (comunisti)? Was this an act of terrorism perpetrated by the "extreme" political right (neo-fascists) or the left (communists)?
