monthly hike at ft. ben

Ft. Ben offers lots of great trails that range from easy to rugged. This park is nice because it's so close to downtown, yet feels so far away from the city!

For this hike, we'll meet at the trail head of the Fall Creek trail, which is near the parking lot by Delaware Lake. This hike will be on the the Fall Creek/Camp Creek loop, which takes about an hour. This trail is moderately rugged as there are stairs and hills. We'll stop for breaks along the way and let any swimmers enjoy Duck Pond.

If it is pouring rain, consider this event to be canceled. Entrance to the park is $5/vehicle. 2014 annual pass for DNR State Parks & Reservoirs are available. They are only $40 and are good from Jan 1st - Dec 31st.

Trail map is available online.

whew - what a winter workout! The trails were covered in snow, which required picking up our feet more and stepping carefully so not to slip. All the dogs loved the snow and were such good hikers. I know my dogs were eager to nap when we got home!

We had a perfect winter day. Fresh fallen snow made the woods a winter wonderland. The trails were great with a soft covering of snow. The temperature was fine, we had a little sunshine here and there and now wind so I never got cold. The dogs loved the snow too.

Here are a few notes about sunday's hike: 1. The temperatures should be in the mid-20s, so I expect the trails to be frozen.

    2. I've received several comments from new members about our meeting location being difficult to find. When you are on the event page in meetup, click on the map link that says "Fort Harrison State Park." This link will open up Google Maps. I've updated the map to place a marker on the exact location for where we are meeting, instead of the physical address of the park.

    3. I encourage you to bring enough water for yourself and your dog(s) and doggie bags. You are expected to pick up after your dog. Hiking boots or snow boots would also be good to wear.
