"BeforeSunrise" and "Before Sunset" at CineMike series

For the next CineMike series, I've chosen the first 2 in Richard Linklater's Before series. We will be doing the newest, "Before Midnight" as our next Indie Film meetup next Sunday. Here's a chance to catch up with the preceding 2 a week and a half later. The roots of Jesse and Celine you might say. Where it all started. Details and links below.

Mike Ivie's media room is a great way to see movies. And everyone brings a snack. Try to come 15-20 minutes before the showing time of 7:00........

I know I'm far from alone here in being a huge fan of Richard Linklater's Before series. And in anticipating the upcoming 3rd one "Before Midnight". For those who are not familiar, it all started in 1995 with "Before Sunrise" where Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy meet on an European train and decide on a whim to get off and hang out in Vienna. "Before Sunset" was 9 years later where they reconnect in Paris and spend the whole day there. Now 9 years later they actually got married somewhere along the way, have a couple of twin daughters and are visiting Greece.

For people who want a detailed plot or explosions, this isn't for them. One of Linklater's style is very talky, dialog rich films.  And all these are mostly Hawke and Delpy walking and talking. And that's it, but they are engaging, and I love them all. Many people do, this series has quite a cult following. Some have referred to this as a trilogy, but I hope not.  I hope as long as the 3 of them are alive, they do one a decade, every 9 years. Hawke is game. He mentioned in a recent interview that he sees it going on like a fictional version of Michael Apted's wonderful British Up documentary series. And Delpy jokes that the last one would be like "Amour". I hope the next one would be where they somehow end up in Austin TX where Linklater is based. It would be so apt.

It was recently reveled that this series is at least partially based on a real life situation with Linklater and a girl he met in Philadelphia. Unfortunately she died before the first one came out 18 years ago. Link below. Also, for those who have never seen the first 2, it almost might be more fun to see this new one, and then go back to the other 2 to catch up on their roots. And the next CineMike series, we will do exactly that, by showing the first 2 on Friday the 21st. Link below.

Also, there was one other time Hawke and Delpy in their Jesse and Celine characters were together. "Waking Life" was Linklater's first attempt at rotoscope animation ( the other being his animated adaptation of Phillip K Dick's "A Scanner Darkly" ). It was an anthology of a couple of dozen animators doing a couple of dozen stories of people talking dreams and philosophy. One of them was Jessy and Celine in bed talking about Timothy Leary. The clip of that is not available, but I included the trailer which has a glimpse of them.

Exact time to be announced later in the week. But we always meet upstairs 20-30 minutes beforehand. And we always go somewhere to eat afterwards, so stick around for that. We might not all sit together, but we meet in the lobby after the movie.

And also, something we're starting to offset the administration costs......there is now a dollar fee to each meetup. Sorry, I hope this won't be too much of an imposition. Cash, check, whatever. Thanks.........

Very good selection. Before Sunrise(I was not able to stay for the Sunset) was wonderful, great dialogue and the Vienna scenery beautiful.
The attendees and hosts are so friendly. Looking forward to the next one!

No Rozanna, that's another group that does that. And they never have the dollar fee at the CineMike get togethers......
