Ok, WAY short notice for this, because it's later tonight ( Friday ), but if anyone wants to make these 2 mockumentaries at the CineMike series........
For the next CineMike series, I've chosen 2 mockumetaries that came out within a year of each other. Christopher Guest is the master at smart mockumentaries, and his affectionate look at 60s folk music "A Mighty Wind" is probably my favorite. And it's hard to top "Waiting for Guffman", "Best in Show" and "For Your Consideration". Not only sharp detail, funny bits but really good songs too. Of the 3 fictional groups, the wholesomely square songs by the New Main Street Singers are a hoot. The other 2 acts were the Folksmen and Mitch and Mickey. I'm looking forward to the Coen brothers early 60s folk music spoof "Inside Llewyn Davis" coming out in December, already earmarked for the Magnolia!
The next one is Kevin Willmott's "Confederate States of America", an uncanny look at a parallel America had the south won the war. Done in a PBS Ken Burns type documentary style, It shows an alternative America where Lincoln went into hiding in Canada. 100 years later, the Republican president John Kennedy was assassinated for his extreme abolitionist leanings. The racial riots of the late 60s were in this different universe, the slave riots and........well that's enough spoilers, the movie has to be seen to be believed. Interspersed are fake commercials which are absurdly tongue-in-cheek racist. And I should point out Willmott is a black man, and he has done as sharp a pointed satire as possible. Very observant.
Bring a dish/snack and try to get there 20-30 minutes beforehand so we can eat, visit and start the movies as close to 7:00 as possible. Mike has a great media room with a giant screen and comfy chairs. See y'all then.......
